@stux Ah, I see. I'd go as low as 'if you have ~$100 million or more, you shouldn't be able to work in Govt, or in any position of power in general". $100 million is more than enough for one person (and/or a large family) to live for the rest of their lives in a more than modest fashion, if not even their successors, and their successors' successors.I factor in here the stupidly expensive costs for certain houses, mansions, or a custom-built home, land costs, possible travel expenses in someone's lifetime, any vehicles they might purchase, donations they make to charities, cost of living, etc - if the person that owns that much money can make sound investments and purchases.

@Mer__edith Yeah no, this post is a big miss and reeks of sh*t. Just because OSes already have disk encryption that can be enabled, doesn't mean Signal shouldn't also at the very least, give the option to also encrypt the files that are saved/cached/whatever.Maybe some missed the option to encrypt their system and can't be arsed to reflash their entire OS again - like me, I didn't see any option in the Debian installer to encrypt the disk or the home folder, and forgot about it, so now I'm currently not in the mood to literally reinstall the system again to manually encrypt it.I know very well that this is risky if someone had access to the hardware, but I would have felt better if Signal Desktop was also encrypting the files.I stopped using Signal, mostly due to its centralised manner, and the phone number requirement, and this issue that apparently has been known for years and not getting fixed, is certainly not pushing me to use Signal again. Do better.

@Mer__edith I mean, look at Molly, a fork of Signal on Android that also encrypts the shared preferences XML file, while regular Signal does not.Signal is both a security and privacy-focused instant messenger. It should encrypt even banal things such as preferences, and shared images, video, media. You're clearly not out of options, and you should provide the encryption for the attachments, because from reading the comments here, it's very much possible.(https://github.com/mollyim/mollyim-android/wiki/Data-Encryption-At-Rest)

@protonprivacy @Bit_form @itsfoss Nice. What AI model does it use? Is it 'ethically-sourced', or is it just ChatGPT or some other model trained on unlicensed data, and is closed-source?

@SuperDicq @tauon Handy, over-simplified guide on WikiHow: https://www.wikihow.com/Become-an-Internet-ProviderThere was a (now-defunct) startup that claimed you could become an ISP for $25K. They have a useless page that doesn't mention that anymore (https://joinnecto.com/).There's this 'financial model'/guide probably written by AI where the total cost is $176K (https://finmodelslab.com/blogs/how-to-open/how-to-open-internet-service-provider).Of course, pricing depends on how many users you want to serve. If you want to become an ISP just for yourself or your family, probably $15K-ish (upfront) I'd say, with some recurring $$$-$$$$/mo costs.

@futurebird I stopped watching "news" on TV years ago, because here in Romania they're all paid in some form by the major political parties.Instead, I resorted to only watching Starea Nației (State of the Nation), a long-running show that was on mainstream news before being kicked out because PSD, one of the parties, paid the news company to do it. So much for "freedom". In recent times, he's received death threats and before being kicked out from the show on the TV program, his wife was also fired by PSD a few days before, in an effort to get him off air.Anyway, the host is charismatic, has many live streams (especially now, when we're in the middle of elections) and shows, and has genuinely informative takes and analyses on what's going on, they're all on YT but they're also building their own platform because YT's algorithm also seems to suppress the videos.I'm also watching Recorder and reading news from G4Media, both are two other independent, unbiased news sources.

@druid @vmachiel@mastodon.nl @Migueldeicaza can't speak for the US, but here in Romania there was (and still is) an active propaganda operation for a fascist candidate, Călin Georgescu, plus the boomer attempts at trying to capture TikTok users' political interest from the current parties that are all centre-right to right-wing, and the general anti-vax, alt-med, ultra-Orthodox garbage and slop.

@davidrevoy Right, because kids can only see a man and a woman kissing on the lips. As if same-sex, same-gender kisses are heretical and utterly forbidden, it'll turn your kids gay and trans! As if children would even care about this distinction in the first place, without their parents intervening and feeding them religious or bigoted slop through indoctrination.I for one, never had an issue with this, ever since I was young. I managed to stay away from deep religious beliefs despite having an Orthodox upbringing up until I was 12.

@SRAZKVT @davidrevoy @rony4102 And of course, Lunduke made a post about it, Ladybird getting attacked by "unhinged, dishonest activists"https://lunduke.locals.com/post/5823666/ladybird-web-browser-developer-attacked-by-unhinged-dishonest-activistsNote that Lunduke's a horrible person, so this article of his is from a heavily biased anti-trans perspective, plus the article and his journal as a whole is from Rumble.

@Nonilex Two paragraphs from the article: “It is acceptable to engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual,” according to Meta’s “GenAI: Content Risk Standards.” The standards are used by Meta staff and contractors who build and train the company’s generative AI products, defining what they should and shouldn’t treat as permissible chatbot behavior. Meta said it struck that provision after Reuters inquired about the document earlier this month. The document seen by Reuters, which exceeds 200 pages, provides examples of “acceptable” chatbot dialogue during romantic role play with a minor. They include: “I take your hand, guiding you to the bed” and “our bodies entwined, I cherish every moment, every touch, every kiss.” Those examples of permissible roleplay with children have also been struck, Meta said.---This is fucking atrocious, sickening and unacceptable 🤮🤮🤮

I've just installed #Immich on my 4GB raspberry pi 5 and it just works out of the box, I've installed the app on the phone, logged in, selected a folder and bam, backed up in a minute or so.Google Photos might take a little longer when backing up stuff.I tried self-hosting ente simply because it didn't require any server-side processing, everything would be handled by the device instead, but it failed to work, couldn't get past the registration screen for whatever reason. But Immich? Ran the Docker Compose version and it just works. It's high-time I moved (or at least held a self-hosted copy) from Google Photos, but it'll be a while for me to back up everything I have 😄

I've disabled machine learning altogether for now since I don't want my Pi to process stuff all the time.Next year when I hopefully will get myself an actual NAS or something I'll definitely use ML for OCR, face and dupe detection, etc.Honestly, if you have a spare Pi lying around doing nothing, do yourself a favor and try ente or Immich, they're so similar to Google Photos (and that's a good thing!).

@cstross Worse, because of our Ceaușist measures against abortion, it didn't just increase the birth rate, but it seriously increased the amount of unwanted children, and just a few years after Decree 770 was passed, Ceaușescu pulled back funding from everything in order to pay Romania's foreign debt. One of our independent news publications, Recorder, released a video about this back in September: https://youtube.com/watch?v=S2G790FEsXk (age-restricted), which showed the conditions in 'handicapped' children asylums / orphanages as they were called back then. Disabled kids were categorized in either 'small', 'medium', or 'total' handicap level. 'total handicap' kids were basically deemed irrecuperable and unproductive. Some of these orphanages were severely understaffed and underfunded, kids would share slices of bread between them, they would huddle in their unlit, grimy and filthy dormitories naked (as they didn't have the funds to get them all clothed), covered in dirt, their own urine and feces...

@cstross They were beaten (as corporal punishment was the norm during the communist regime), the kids starved to death, I would consider this as a crime against humanity, and if Ceaușescus had a fair trial, I'm more than sure the kids' conditions and deaths would have been added to their tally. And I'm not even covering the lack of teachers back then, teachers had to shorten their classes in order to accommodate the sheer amount of students in their classes, and the economic toll that Ceaușescu's debt repayment plan took on parents that then had to ultimately send their kids to orphanages because they couldn't afford everything they needed.Hopefully they are prepared to accommodate the rise by ensuring there are enough school staff, enough hospital staff, and ensuring that parents can afford having one or more children under these new measures 🙁
