Meta will lay off 10,000 more employees over three rounds of cuts through May and close hiring for 5,000 open roles. “This will be tough and there’s no way around that,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees moments ago. https://www.theverge.com/2023/3/14/23629726/meta-layoffs-mark-zuckerberg-facebook-tech-recruiting

From Zuckerberg’s note to employees announcing more cuts:- Many managers will be asked to convert to IC roles- He “underestimated the indirect costs” of running low-priority projects- Sounds like junior engineers could be asked to come into the office at least 3 days per weekI’ll have more on all this in this week’s edition of Command Line dropping Thursday https://www.theverge.com/subscriptions/command-line

Apple has bought Mira, an AR startup that provides headsets for the Mario Kart ride at Nintendo World. The company also has US military contracts and was formerly advised by Jony Ive. https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/6/23751350/apple-mira-ar-headset-startup

Meta is planning to release its Twitter competitor in mid July, I’m told. It will eventually hook into Mastodon/ActivityPub but not at first. https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/23/23771599/command-line-musk-versus-zuckerberg

Seems like this is going to result in Meta’s content moderation policies essentially become the Fedi standard, unless servers want to shut out what will be the biggest server by far. It’s going to be interesting!

Re: ActivityPub integration, it's still a priority for Threads but a "long" way out. Some other new info:- The biggest region for Threads (by a wide margin) is the US, followed by Brazil.- A team of just 3 product managers, 3 designers, and “50ish” engineers created & launched Threads in 5 months.
