@wowaname @eal @kaniini @crushv Pawoo collects data and targets ads if I read the privacy policy correct. Maybe the ads are not on that instance, yet, maybe the data targets ads elsewhere. Many companies run without ads for years. Instagram, snapchat, Facebook, whatsapp.Pawoo is the overall biggest mastodon instance. Maybe they paid for marketing?Free and no ads.. sounds good. /sI heard it before. https://www.pixiv.net/terms/?page=privacy

@bob @sim @eal @kaniini @crushv There used to be ads in the local newspapers, in towns with 100 000 people. Would it be impossible to imagine an instance with 100 000 active users and 80% of them looking at ads and 20% paying to turn off ads and data.

@headachebooth @crushv @kaniini @eal @sim @bob Pleroma.site blocked Albin.social because of the (not yet implemented) ads and data collection. They recommended other Pleroma instances to do the same. Note that there was never any talk about showing ads outside of Albin and particularly not on Pleroma or Mastodon.- - -I suspect a situation like this: Twitter is Windows and Mastodon is Linux. Linux has been free and "better" than Windows for probably 20 years now. People don't switch? Why?

@bob @crushv @sim @eal @kaniini @headachebooth Good point. That's exactly what I thought of doing because I, ehum, cannot afford someone to develop anything until I have sold some ads or subscriptions.. Fuck. That's it then, project down the drain.I just remembered, there is a long thread about instance only posts. Rejected because risk of centralization . https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/pull/8427Federation is complicated. Whitelisting is also frowned upon for the same reason if I remember correctly.

@bob @crushv @sim @eal @kaniini @headachebooth Federation is complicated, who's responsible? If my terms says, no photos of dogs, and your instance says dogs okay. Is it you breaking my terms by sending them out in the fediverse, no.Is it me breaking my own terms, no, I should probably stop every individual such post from showing but there is no such feature. The user have no control where the post go, it's public, but then?Perhaps federation is not the answer? Influencer AD: "Buy Albin!"

@sim @eal @bob @kaniini @headachebooth @crushv If I can decide my own rules, then I could simply allow ads on my own instance and also only collect data for the ads from my own instance. And make sure that the ads doesn't leave the instance, then everything should be okay? A commercial instance federating with a non commercial. Like Pawoo.net and mastodon.socialWhy is everyone upset really, no one is forced to join my instance. I cannot change the code on your instance.

@Gargron From the consuming point of view I find it very useful. I have already seen the same username on several instances and wondered if any of them was a joker or the real person. With this verification it's much better. To avoid confusion with any blue checkmark you could perhaps add a little message that appears when you follow the link. "this link is verified by Mastodon see info here or continue to link"

@Gargron It can happen, and it would be good for the world. If we want most people here, the challenge is to get 3000 people working full time on Mastodon, and another 3000 people working on Pleroma. Twitter and Snapchat are steaming ahead on that level. The current trajectory for the Fediverse is pointing somewhere towards the Linux desktop market share of about 3%. Which is a very good product for the technical minority, but of no interest for the majority of people.

@Gargron They have all been needed to create the product of twitter as it is today - with many users. When we remove parts of the puzzle, like sales and marketing we can not achieve similar growth. We can grow, but not to the majority. To reach the majority, 80% of work is non-technical.Other functions are also needed, not just development. Design, a lot of marketing, PR, etc. It's nothing wrong with staying small though. Especially good and small.

@peter Good article.A thought. If the problem with Twitter is on a personal level, a small Mastodon is enough to solve it fully. But if the problem is on a national or even global level, Mastodon needs to be big for it to have any positive effect on the problem.

@Ninjatrappeur I like the idea of machine generated examples. It could also be a good basis for humans writers of documentation.

@solidsanek I heard Max are in Dubai and is a good alternative. https://www.maxburgers.com/Starting in May 2008, Max has labeled all products with their individual climate impactIn 2013, Max's offset its total co2 climate impact to 100%Currently, we are responsible for the emission of 29 000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) each year.2018 we offset 110% which make everything on our menu climate positive. They also try reducing meat by promoting vegetarian alternatives

@mdhughes I skimmed through the privacy policy and it looks all right. They claim that server and apps do not send data to Nextcloud. Also you can self host. Is there anything specific that makes you dislike them?

@switchingsocialI normally like your posts but now you are spreading misinformation by omission. "Annual turnover below €10 million" are excluded. You call a site with 10 million euro turnover a tiny indie site?"Fewer than 5 million unique monthly visitors" are excluded. Small sites are not affected at all. With 10 million/year there is no need to outsource to Google.Otherwise I have no opinion pro or against article 13.

@miya All right, fair enough, I see so many trolls everywhere, also in the mirror sometimes, so I might have been too quick there. Sorry.Interesting points you make here. I'm producing © sometimes, but I am also a fan of creative commons and open source. I think the mix of available license options is pretty good for art, text and software.I like that the creator, not the pirate, decide over the license, but I respect the political discussion.

@Ninjatrappeur @giorgiograppa Switch between this and a normal keyboard every week and feel your brain starting to use wires you didn't even know existed ;-)Looks very interesting. It's probably patented so no one else can sell it.
