A thousand years ago, I began to abandon the idea of becoming a lawyer because (without having a clue what I was doing) I installed the now defunct Mandrake Linux with KDE on my PC.But the feeling of success (and feeling like a real hacker) came when I opened the Amarok player and was able to play 'Comfort Eagle' by CAKE. It worked on right away! Now I feel nostalgic every time I hear it.Looking back, I think that was a key moment.https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=ezoOnI95BpEI didn't know it then, but, as the song says, indeed, 'We are building a religion, we are building it bigger’.#linux

@marxistvegan You're getting into the world of self-hosting ;) You need a file server, i.e., a headless PC. You can set it up with Ubuntu or Debian server, for example, and from there you have several options for accessing the server files: I do it via sftp, but you can opt for samba or nfs. There are plenty of tutorials that describe how to do this.By the way, when you set up the server, don't forget to organize your backup system. The server is, after all, a PC and can fail.

@marxistvegan Okay, so you're talking about using a remote desktop through a client (a mini PC, a laptop... a thin client, basically). You can achieve this with optimal response times on your local network, but not instantaneously as if it were a local desktop. For the remote desktop, you can use VNC or RDP, for example. However, a mini PC with limited resources can run a simple desktop or window manager without any problems and use the server as file and services (Docker server is an easy solution) storage. I think this is the best option.

If you use Duplicati on your Linux server via Docker to perform backups to an external USB drive, this must be mounted before the container starts up. Otherwise, Duplicati will throw an error ("missing files") when it tries to perform the backup because it cannot verify the files on the external drive, even though it tells you that it can detect that external drive. The quickest solution in this case is to restart the Duplicati container.#selfhosting #duplicati

I've been using wget for years, but until today I didn't know that you can resume a failed download just by adding the -c variable, i.e., wget -c url. A new tip for the collection.#Linuxtipsandtricks #linux

My old monitor died a few days ago. Today I connected the new one and it wasn't detected by xrandr --listmonitors. The docking station works fine, the power supply too. What if I change the monitor cable layout, swapping them between VGA, HDMI, and DP? Nope! Anyway, after half an hour of different tests, I applied the ignorant solution, i.e., restarting the laptop. Guess what? It works. Why? No fucking clue, man! And I'm the "computer expert" in the family.

I just want a cat. That's all! Oh, a friend told me there's a litter of orphaned kittens and asked me if I want one. Okay, I have two cats, that's all! There's a skinny little cat in my town that keeps begging my parents for food... Oh, damn it.

Years ago, I bought one of Samsung's tablets. It was incredibly fast, and despite being a good device, it wasn't top of the range. But, over time, it became useless due to "technological" obsolescence. I'll find a use for it tho...If you pay the same amount today, proportionally, you get much less. Slow, loaded with bloatware... It's not that we want to hack our devices, it's that we're pushed to do so. And then they call you "anti-establishment" because you want to use your hardware for more than 3 years.#android

There will be a reboot of the series 'Scrubs' and several actors from its legendary predecessor have been confirmed: Zach Braff (John Dorian, the perpetually insecure protagonist), John C. McGinley (the sarcastic Dr. Cox), Donald Faison (John Dorian's inseparable buddy), and Sarah Chalke (John Dorian's peculiar partner... Or not). It's a pity that some of the former stars are no longer with us and others are too old for this, but if the series is half as good as the original, it will be a success. #tvshows

@DontBlameMe It's nice, but I've always found the nord theme to be the "softest" and least aggressive on the user's eyes. In the end, it's a matter of taste, I guess.https://www.nordtheme.com/

If you want Wi-Fi network to work perfectly, you need to use dedicated, specialized hardware. At work, everything is fine, but at home I was temporarily using a mini PC with a Wi-Fi card as a router/firewall, and video streaming, for example, was suffering. Now I have an wireless access point with VLANs channeling all Wi-Fi traffic (currently with three devices simultaneously streaming via Jellyfin), and everything is running smoothly, with instant video playback.Lesson learned... And shared.#homelab
