I picked up this little hand operated grinder at a flea market this weekend for $20(!!!). Other than some rust, which I really consider more of a patina, it's in surprisingly good condition. It still had oil in the bearings when I spun it, and it didn't feel rough in the least bit.I'll probably take it apart and clean up any dirt or gunk, but otherwise I might forego the wire wheel on the angle grinder and give it a once over with a wire brush. I took the grinder apart. It doesn't use bearings, just gears, but they were in like new condition. I found one small chip in a tooth and some gunk but that was it. As planned it just wiped away the loose rust with a wire brush and coated with boiled linseed oil. I lubed it with some 10w-30 but on second thought maybe some gear oil would've been more appropriate. @su oh I've seen those for sale at Lehman's before. My dad has some cherry trees that produce tons of fruit. I should get one so we could make something useful out of it.

I forged another fire poker this weekend, in the same style as the last one I made. The faggot welds are a piece of cake, but the jump weld is still proving challenging for me. I ended up having to double it back on itself for extra material because I made the scarfs too thin. In any case I'm pleased with the end result. I'm making a handle for a shovel I was given by an older gentleman who has been a mentor to me on occasion. It has a forge welded basket handle, and I did much better this time with the jump weld. Figuring out the correct air mixture for the coal was one challenge, but my welded areas were still too thin. This time I upset the bars both from ⅜" to ½" before scarfing, and that solved the problem. The weld line is still visible, and I think my issue there is I'm not getting the end of the scarf thin enough. Next one I'll give it a try and see if it's any better.

Tomorrow I will rivet the shovel to the handle and heat for an oil finish. I'll probably just do that with a propane torch.
