Due to the nature of my work, I get allocated my annual leave and have to try to swap it with my colleagues if I want specific dates off, including dates during the school holidays. As a lot of us have kids, those who get allocated annual leave during the school holidays tend to keep those dates.I have a week booked off next month and my wife managed to get the same week off (she’s in the same boat as me with annual leave). Armed with a letter from my employer, confirming that I don’t get to choose my holiday and emailing my son’s school from my work email address, I requested authorisation for my son to be away from school for a week in November.My son’s attendance is 99% and he’s top of his class in every subject apart from drama.Within minutes, his school rang me to say that my request had been declined and that I’d receive a formal letter, confirming this. A note of the dates have been made and if my son is absent for those dates, the matter will be referred to the local council to decide whether or not we’ll be fined £60.To be honest, the attendance officer from the school was really nice about it and told me that the only time a request for holiday during term time had been granted was when someone’s family member was terminally ill and it was likely to be their last holiday together. Ultimately, she was just doing her job and I respect that.What annoys me is that any “fine” is actually a fee. If you can afford the £60, it’s not a problem and I’m fortunate that for me, it isn’t an issue… it’s just the principle that pisses me off.I feel for families who can’t afford the extortionate cost of a nice holiday during the school breaks and even more so for those who can’t afford the council’s fee.Consideration should be given to individual circumstances and I’m surprised that my request was denied. I guess I’ll just pay the fee when the letter arrives.

I’m trying to persuade my sister to join my Snikket server so she doesn’t have to keep emailing me photos and files but she’s paranoid because around 20 years ago, I sent a specific text string to her Nokia 5110 that I knew would freeze up the phone.Yes, I did do that but it was 20 bloody years ago!!

Back in/around the year 2000, I worked part-time delivering pizzas for Domino’s… I only did this for a year or two.I’ve just been clearing out the loft because I’m going to re-insulate it and was curious about the contents of some of the black bags labelled “Alan”. These are bags I’ve just carted around with me for years because they have my name on them.I was quite surprised to find a brand-new Domino’s Pizza hot bag and bomber jacket in one of the black bags. I remember grabbing these despite continuing using my older bag and coat, so when I finally left the job I gave them back the tatty stuff.I also found an Arriva-branded driver’s bag, still in its packaging, from when I was a bus driver in London.

My brother-in-law swore blind that he’d brought more beers camping than he’d drunk. He, my sister and their kids have packed up and gone home today leaving me and my wife here (in peace!) and I just found his beers in our camping fridge.It’d be a shame to not drink them 🤫

Sunburnt FeetWe returned home from camping yesterday and the day before, I’d fallen asleep in a chair which was in the shade. Unfortunately, as I slept, the shade disappeared and my feet were left out in the burning sun.Plenty of moisturiser and paracetamol helps, but going back to work today and having to wear shoes for a whole 8 hours really wasn’t very comfortable 😮
