@jwz @me Honestly I’d rather iMessage wasn’t an open protocol, because it not being means there’s essentially zero spam. RCS, which is what Android uses, is an open protocol, but because it was designed by the carriers it’s only accessible from the telephone network, not from the Internet, probably allows per-message billing (like SMS did) and likely requires hefty fees and conformance tests before you can use it.

@sanguish @realcaseyrollins @bigzaphod As someone who likes Dune (the book), I’ll say that I *also* like the David Lynch film, though it takes considerable liberties. It’s a good film with great costumes and sets. There are a few things about it that I actually prefer to the new film (though there’s plenty to like there too, and it’s a lot closer to the book).

@sanguish @bigzaphod @realcaseyrollins Also, anyone who likes Dune should totally visit North Africa. You can see where Frank Herbert got a lot of his inspiration. I still remember hearing the water sellers amidst the omnipresent scent of spices in the souk. The desert is amazing too (though I didn’t go into the dunes).

@krismicinski @adrian @ricci @steve @dave_andersen @regehr You’d have to ask a battery chemist to be sure, but AFAIK all it does is slow everything down and I don’t see why that would do any permanent damage. Might be issues with things getting discharged because of people trying to *use* them when they’re too cold, mind.

@krismicinski @adrian @dave_andersen @regehr @ricci @steve Looks like the answer is leaving your car connected to power, telling it to preheat before using it, and if possible putting it in a garage or using a blanket to keep it warm. (Scandinavians do those things with ICE vehicles too I believe; certainly Volvo used to have an option to connect to utility power.)

@krismicinski @adrian @dave_andersen @regehr @ricci @steve Worth looking what they do in Norway. Lots of EVs there and it gets properly cold. I don’t recall seeing stories about stranded Teslas there either, in spite of them being very popular.

@stairjoke @gruber Case law isn’t a U.S. thing. It’s a Common Law thing. And actually, statutes in most Common Law countries are supposed to be interpreted having regard for the intent of legislators when the law was written. But the judiciary can’t invent words or rules that aren’t there; if a statute applies, it means what it says. The flexibility is in the ability to apply, create and update case law.

@Migueldeicaza @Alexbbrown One thing I did once when I needed to easily get files in and out of an iPad was I built a WebDAV server that ran on the iPad as part of the app I was working on, and advertised it with Bonjour. Then I could just drag and drop files from my Mac.

@NanoRaptor @scrottie The other fun thing about line printers was the print speed. I once made the mistake of trying to catch the output as it was printing 😂

@fay59 @madcoder Does your car collect the address book when a phone is attached? It’d be hilarious if they’ve handed you their phone number and other details by plugging in.

@NanoRaptor @the_other_jon Line printers were *way* louder. Slightly less unpleasant noise but dear me were they ever noisy.

Does OpenAI actually have any physical presence in the EU? My guess is not. It’ll be interesting to see how OpenAI chooses to handle this. https://noyb.eu/en/chatgpt-provides-false-information-about-people-and-openai-cant-correct-it

@madcoder @fay59 When I was at school, one of my maths teachers pointed out that if you count in binary, you can count up to 1,024 on your digits…
