@futurebird NYC was the only city I've lived in where if you do forget an umbrella the instant it starts raining there are fifty people trying to sell you the flimsiest piece of crap umbrella you've ever seen.Projectile umbrellas are why I carry a hat instead...

I love the Fediverse because half of it is like "fifteen well-sourced reasons for UBI" and the other half is "I draw the furry porn your dad doesn't admit to buying" and they're actually the same half.

I've given up on truth. At this point I'm just trying to convince the emperor to wear sunscreen. (And don't participate in conversations about his new clothes...)

Ways I know gas is too cheap: parked between two vehicles sitting there idling, one with a driver (with the AC on and the windows open(!)), one without.Went into the store, came out, both still idling. This is one of those things that electric cars would really help with.

It is worth noting that this is technically illegal in Massachusetts, but basically never enforced. (You get five minutes of idling, less if you're a big truck or someone complains or you're near an air intake.)

@futurebird that's the great thing about conspiracy theories; they're immune to logic.I presume if pressed, spouters would say something about evil bad people wanting people dead; fixating on the religiousness of the dead, probably blaming another religion. This in turn becomes "evidence" tha Those People are evil. It's like arguing with teflon.

@futurebird a humanized version of PKD's "Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away."Nice.

@futurebird Did you live in NYC during the "Guardian Angels" period? I would see them occasionally, back when, and that was before/around high profile events like Bernie Getz and the LIRR shooting. It was a fascinating social experiment, with (IMHO) no "right" side, and I'd love to hear your take.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_Angels

@futurebird As with the current situation, crime was overhyped in the name of policing. Very frustrating. To your main point: I do remember how jarring it was to have tac-garbed people with automatic rifles standing guard (over what?!) in, e.g. Penn Station after 9/11.At the time, my dad said, "They're trying to get us used to it." (The term "Overton Window" hadn't entered public discourse yet.)He was right, of course.

Maybe thirty years of prioritizing "faster, frictionless software creation" was a mistake.Maybe we should have focused on "easier, more frictionless software testing".

@futurebird We used to have strong usury laws. Credit card companies got them weakened, under Reagan IIRC.Every time I see a rate over 10% it is a reminder of how corrupted our capitalism has become.

@futurebird Cats communicate primarily using ears, gaze angle, and posture. So I would guess an emphatic yes for noticing.Pointing (i.e. inferring location from someone else's gesture) is more complex, requiring a model of mind, but I suspect some cats would. Certainly mine have sometimes followed my gaze to try to figure out what got my attention.

@futurebird @lemgandi @cstross No, no, the uncertainty is part of the attack. You never know what to do to avoid the abuse, so you oppress yourself.See also the spotty enforcement of speed limits, etc.
