Turns out the UK bank who axed Nigel Farage accounts wasn’t suffering from fits of liberal snowflake remainia. It’s that Coutts told him he was too poor now and he didn’t take them up on the offer to move NatWest.Coutts may have one (1) pat on the back as a reward for the press release clarifying it wasn’t his horrible opinions that merited ending their business with the man, but because he was too common.

@john EU said no to Threads over collusion and anticompetitive practises not GDPR.To start a new social network in the EU smartly requires an empty social graph, or for Meta to grant others access to its social graph. They are rightly being punished for bootstrapping Threads with Insta.

Stop using Chrome as your daily driver.Google proposed adding DRM to Chrome, which will be used to stop ad blockers, privacy tools, password plugins, accessibility/reader modes. The only way to stop Google’s Chrome from wrecking the internet like Internet Explorer did for many year to switch to a NOT chromium-based browser as soon as possible for your day to day. You’ve got Safari, and Firefox as your choices.I know you’ll have to use Chrome sometimes because it’s already happening.

@stux it’s not a croissant unless it comes from La Campagne Croississant, otherwise it’s just a flakey pastry.

@john you're already following me. I have a more positive take on it, and although I tend to avoid the alarmism, I am resigned to the fact that grifters are going to grift.

At the top of The Verge, a tech reporting outfit that I thought lost its voice a few years back, is an absolute BANGER of a take down of Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz.A worthy read about how two of Silicon Valley's most famous VCs have fully thrown in with Trump. #USpol https://www.theverge.com/2024/7/24/24204706/marc-andreessen-ben-horowitz-a16z-trump-donations

@JugglingWithEggs @john I think of it as having a friend who isn’t ready for an intervention, you’d no longer ask for help from for moving, you only would invite to the big parties because you’d know they’d notice they weren’t invited, and cutting them off entirely means unnecessary pain upfront.Yes, it’s obviously not good. But being cloyingly polite despite hating someone is a British tradition, and in this case a necessity until we get our ducks in a row.Us Brits should get it.

Why is the reading experience better in the apps (like the Guardian)?Because the tracking cookies and adversarial content is baked into the app and governed by the terms of service. You don’t have a way out, unlike the web site with the cookie notice. So that’s why they push the apps. They’re less accountable that way.
