@freemo I've only been here a few days but very much appreciate the value of the work you are doing. Be sure to look after yourself as well however you can.

@freemo Not sure I can add much, but I'm certainly interested.

@lxo @mediocreape @freemo @lxo makes a good point here. I think the "alternate walled garden" analogy is misleading. #ufoi is an agreement between gardeners that they will not build walls between themselves.

@freemo @mediocreape @lxo There's an interesting (but paywalled) editorial board opinion piece discussing social media platform problems at https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/12/19/elon-musk-twitter-destroyed-fix/I reference it because, buried in after all the back-story is the following statement, which I like, and I think is also relevant in the context of this thread."What matters is that they’re set up to get it right, in aggregate, according to the public commitments they’ve made. That starts with something as simple as platforms committing to transparency, "This lines up nicely with the intent of the UFoI.

@freemo @hasmis Apart from the pragmatic reasons, there's another good reason to avoid excessive instance-level blocking, although it is perhaps not so visible. An admin's choice to let users decide for themselves what they want to block is fundamentally a sign of respect. It says "I trust you to decide for yourself what you want to see."And respect is a mutual thing. Users tend to respect admins (e.g. @freemo) who do this. The end result is a better atmosphere on the instance.

@hasmis @freemo There's an excellent (1976) essay by a guy named Carlo Cipolla on the general topic of stupidity. You may already have seen it. If not, it's worth checking out.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlo_M._CipollaSee in particular, his 1st law: "Always and inevitably, everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation."There's also a nice two-factor classification scheme in there (see the figure in the wikipedia article).

@peterdrake I have noticed it as well, starting yesterday (or perhaps a little earlier). Many of them are coming from sites listed in the #fediblock list. For the first time since joining the fediverse, I have resorted to domain blocking, and that seems quite effective.

@foolishowl @peterdrake Ah - apologies for possible mis-use of the hashtag there. I'm perfectly happy with the system of choosing what instances to block for myself rather than asking admins to do it.

@_the_cloud @pluralistic Another street sign I saw (in Melbourne Australia) many years ago:"Blind Elderly People Crossing"which seems like a horribly cruel thing to do.
