Apropos the Tories wanting to bring back the death penalty, I saw someone saying “why not reserve it for people with multiple murder convictions, because it’d be vanishingly unlikely they could be innocent of them all?”My brother in Christ, let me introduce you to a concept called “correlated errors”!

Apropos everything, I’m reminded of this from Douglas Adams:1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.2. Anything that’s invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.3. Anything invented after you’re thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

In the beginning, Twitter outages were every twelve weeks. Then six, then three. Then every two weeks. The last one, in Sydney was a week. In four days we could be seeing an outage every eight hours until they are coming every four minutes. We should witness a Double Event within seven days.

Interesting thread concluding that Samsung is using an AI model to replace users’ blurry, super-zoomed photos of the Moon with slightly higher res textures. How did they discover this? 1. They downloaded a high res image of the Moon2. Downscaled it to a blurry 170x170px image on their computer monitor3. Took a photo of it on the Samsung with the room lights out…and they got a magically higher-res Moon! Clever.https://reddit.com/r/Android/comments/11nzrb0/samsung_space_zoom_moon_shots_are_fake_and_here/

AI image enhancement and upscaling isn’t new or exclusive to Samsung, of course. Take a blurry image of some grass and an algorithm can fill in the gaps based on what it thinks “grass” looks like. People usually don’t notice or care; with the Moon it’s weird (and weirdly effective) because it looks the same for everyone, and everyone knows what it looks like.

Is it bad? I’d need to think more about it! Smartphone photography is already incredibly processed, lightyears from film photography of old. People should probably be more aware that the image their phone shows them is increasingly distant from “reality” – though most of the time, people don’t want reality!

I was trying to think of a good sci-fi short story idea around this. Turns out I already wrote it in my book, A New History of the Future in 100 Objects, three years ago! I've just put it on my blog for free.https://mssv.net/2023/03/11/enhance/

From Threads/Meta’s perspective, dangling ActivityPub support to enable federating with Mastodon is a shield against regulators, that’s all - to be deployed at the last possible instance, in the crappiest way, as they always have done. Anyone believing the contrary has ignored the past 20 years of history.

I know it’s cool to hate on the Galactic Starcruiser (aka Star Wars hotel) but it’s an idea before its time - bizarrely so, given Disney made it. I already have over 3000 words just in notes - prepare for an epic writeup!

This interview with Riley Testut of Delta/AltStore is fascinating. Tons of details, plus he thinks users are more willing to pay via a Patreon to an individual creator/dev, versus an impersonal subscription for an app. https://www.theverge.com/24150467/delta-emulator-apple-app-voice-notes-ai-vergecast

I have no reason to doubt that Tati built an entire airport terminal, multiple office buildings, shops, and a restaurant just to film a single movie (Playtime), yet my mind rebels. How? How?!?!

“Best I can do is quoting Addiction By Design again, apparently the only book that’s ever been written about gamification even though it’s not actually about gamification.”
