@aral am I missing something? The "terrorist attack" you mention is the pager bombs from this week, right? But the quote you give is is from about two months ago, not after this particular attack (although there were certainly plenty of other Israeli war crimes happening at that time)

@publius @cR0w @wheeljack I mean you're right in the sense that until recently *Chernobyl alone* had a better safety record than the average solar installation, and I think it still beats just about anything else...But AI is using all the new nuclear power *plus* increasing demand for fossil power as well. So even if they do repoen a few old nuclear plants (I haven't heard of any actual new ones under construction, that might help long-term but we might all be cooked by then) it's still a net loss unless/until all this AI crap dies.

@Yuki The Free Software Movement is socialist; the Open Source movement is the sanitized, pro-capitalist techbro version.

@seachanger I dunno. It's tempting to say that Mastodon is too focused on not repeating the mistakes of other social media that they aren't replicating the good things either, while Bluesky is so focused on replicating the experience of other networks that they're repeating a lot of the same mistake too.But that cash issue is not just a cash issue. It's an exploitation issue. As far as I can tell, "trust and safety" on other platforms simply cannot be done without mass abuse and exploitation, *even with* millions in VC money to burn. They have such "good" moderation by giving impoverished people PTSD every day in exchange for a one dollar wage. The secret isn't an algorithm, it's sweatshops full of people watching children get abused all day long. There is no tried and true solution Mastodon can use here. There is nothing they can learn from other networks. "Fuck that, we're not doing that here" is absolutely the best thing that can be learned from how other platforms handle content moderation.Could Mastodon Gmbh do more experimentation to try to find a better solution? Sure. Always. Could other people who think they have a great solution just implement it themselves? Also yes. Several are actively doing that, with varying degrees of success. I kinda prefer that, personally. Especially considering that I have yet to see any solution that is not a centralized system. Mastodon is centralized enough already, but at least we can have multiple centers for multiple tasks instead the entire damn thing under one single company for most users. But it is a Very Fucking Hard Problem.

@FediTips I remember learning this when they first introduced edits but I think edits weren't widely supported by clients yet or something, so by the time I started seeing edits in the wild I'd forgotten. Just tried it out and it is excellent! Especially when someone edits a reallly long post, after you've boosted it. You get a notification that it changed, but it's good to be able to quickly know *what* they changed that now got your pre-emptive endorsement. Thanks for the reminder!

@soatok I'm sure they are actually well aware of your concerns. The purpose of surveys like this is not scientific research, it's marketing. Understanding your concerns was never the goal; the goal is to force people with legitimate concerns to pick an option that they can easily "debunk" later. If their survey only lets you pick silly reasons then they can come out later and say that their "research" shows most people afraid of AI feel that way for silly reasons.

@foone see, this is why I do so many of my personal projects in PHP. I'm sitting here at work all day dealing with shitty fucking build systems, where it builds on their PC but not on mine, where it throws errors that the directory does not exist *while it is in that directory*, where every day is a new "no that place where it says it's failing isn't the error, the error is a thousand lines down where it says everything is fine"...So then I grab some PHP. Cause PHP doesn't care. PHP doesn't build. PHP you just git checkout and it fucking runs. No pom, no annotations, no pulling in two gigs of libraries to compile twenty lines of code. And when something breaks you get an error message and a line number, not ten pages of indecipherable gibberish. Stop coding code to tell the code how to code code so the code can decode your code and just fucking code.

@fkamiah17 @aral Any idea if Fair Lady was captured? They were having engine trouble and were literally sailing, and were one of the last still going last night...but they were in the back of the pack. According to Al Jazeera, Israel says one boat still sailing that will be stopped if it attempts to breach the blockade -- implying they haven't even tried. Feels like either an insult to sameone far behind or they're just referring to one of the legal support ships.

@benroyce @john @ShredderFeeder Not everyone has the time to do that research. It ain't always easy. I'm regularly voting based on literally nothing more than a four year old interview on local radio from when the person was running for some different office. And for some races even that would be a lot of information. In at least one election all I could find to go on were photos of the candidate putting up yard signs! You only even get *claims* about what they want to accomplish at the highest level races, and even those require carefully watching their past history to know if they actually believe a single damn word of it. I struggle to figure this shit out and I'm invested enough to be taking classes on how to research candidates! It'd be great if we had a party that actually held their candidates to some standard; an organization to do some of that vetting for us; instead of Ds and Rs that switch parties like an NFL draft without actually changing their positions...Running under either party is basically just running with a corporate sponsor at this point. The only thing it proves is money and/or connections. And if you truly believe that people can all independently determine and vote for the best candidate then why does it matter which party? Why do we need parties at all? These organizations are either irrelevant or failures. Or they're highly successful as gatekeepers against us.

@benroyce @john @ShredderFeeder Voting for an organization that is trying to keep you out is acceptance. Things will change when we participate in the work of actually organizing our communities and building institutions we can trust. The voting part matters but it's far from the most important thing. It won't do shit until we fix some of these other structural issues first."If voting changed anything they'd make it illegal"

@sue Nobody ever wants to understand the code. Before LLMs it was copy/paste-ing random crap from Stack Overflow or just pushing the button and hoping for the best. I've had colleagues -- professional software engineers with 10+ years of experience -- tell me they "shouldn't have to read" about a command-line script printing one damn line of instructions. "It should just do it! I shouldn't have to care what it's doing or how it's doing it!" Even most coders don't want to code. And they never have......and this is why there's no end to the bugs and security vulnerabilities. Because nobody wants to know what they're doing. If it compiles, ship it, and fix the bugs when the users find them in production.

@vicfroh Yeah because that will certainly be the one law ICE is willing to obey...This is just another MAGA sympathizer trying to find ways to excuse ICE continuing to exist.

@billybon3s @vicfroh Because it's a violation of federal law, and if they're willing to break that law then why wouldn't they break others?ICE is not law enforcement. They do not exist to chase after criminals. They do not exist to do security patrols. There is nothing that could possibly authorize them to be at polling stations. They have to business being there. But they've already violated most of our rights and thrown our Constitution into a shredder so why not fuck with our right to vote too, right?By the way, the Constitution says states have a right to decide how they regulate voting. You know what it doesn't say a goddamn word about? Immigration.
