@tindall what's disgusting to me is that it reeks of "embrace, extend, extinguish", which msft is notorious for doing. I'm sure it'll further win over a few more linux users to use a few more msft products now that they run on linux.then the next machine they get will have windows installed from their IT department, and they can goto the Windows Store to install Ubuntu for all their linux needs!then they'll develop amazing improvements to Ubuntu which won't work in the linux kernel and only work on WSL.then developers will dev on top of WSL first, and linux kernel will rotthen Microsoft's stock goes up 2%sounds like a win in the corporate books to me.

@ink_slinger whole thread is yuck.on one side, i hope they adopt AP and its easier for people to get off twitter and move to another AP instance.on the other hand, keep greasy megacorps off the fedi. we know they're going to be scraping the whole thing for tracking and targeting, then the profiles they're keeping on users will extend beyond twitter. instance admins would have to draw a pretty hard line to block federation with twitter, and I'm most of the big ones (.social, etc) would have enough pressure from users to connect to twitter that admins would get a lot of backlash for blocking.

I started repairing broken electronic toys for kids in our family friend circle, and now almost every kid thinks I'm some sort of wizard.explaining how their toys work inside and letting them help me fix the broken bits.if I had full freedom, I think I'd do this full time. I love to see the magic in their eyes and help them gain a love for tinkering. maybe take some on as little apprentices, and have them go off into their own hackerspaces, exceed my ability, and grow the community, and continue to foster local build/repair/development.

i need better monitoring for my personal stuffcan anyone suggest some kind of self-hosted dashboard that can semi-intelligently ping web services and notify when they're down? providing a status/history a bonus but not required.like smokeping maybe, but more like red light green light.

@BunnyHearted yea i'd like to avoid the nagios / zabbix / grafana route if I can. while I'm fully capable of setting up real monitoring, just looking for something basic to give a heads up to me or a few users if something is up on the surface.

Fucking beaverton killed it with the Wet'suet'en piece."removing journalists to prevent them from creating third-party documentation of policing actions not only protects the Canadian public from being exposed to this documentation, but protects the journalists themselves from harm they could face in an “active conflict area,” a term the RCMP use to describe an area in which the RCMP have activated a conflict.“It was very damaging to our relationship with Indigenous communities when journalists revealed that we had snipers in place and were prepared to use deadly force against the Wet’suwet’en during a raid in 2019, so it’s clearly in the best interests of everyone to keep journalists from revealing that kind of information about us in the future,” the RCMP statement went on to say."“If a raid occurs in the forest and the press isn’t around to see it, did it even happen?”https://www.thebeaverton.com/2020/02/rcmp-exclusion-zones-necessary-to-protect-canadian-public-from-dangers-of-rampant-journalism/
