A highly centralized authority structure is not at odds with highly decentralized decisionmaking. Authority is about how has final say, not about who actively weighs in on every question. I think the opposite is true too: you can have highly decentralized authority yet everyone chooses to follow what one decisionmaker chooses to do.

By @zephoria's definition of failure, I think Twitter does not, as of yet, appear to be failing. Most of the people I see active on here I still see being active on there (yours truly very much included). Yet I must admit that even if Twitter keeps going, and even aside from the Musk aspect, I hope that the boost the Fediverse has been given proves to have permanently put it on a growth trajectory. I really do prefer the model.

Philosophy of law people are like “the court is the only institution that relies entirely on legitimacy because it needs the other branches to enforce its rulings” as though judges didn’t have the power to put people in jail purely on suspicious that they had contempt for the court.

All offices with authority have that authority due to the norms of the institution they’re a part of; institutional actors follow their orders or show deference according to those norms. Judges are not special in this regard.

"Because of the lack of a true response (and a lack of obvious places to find one), there is no end in sight for this wave of anti-trans governance. The situation is bleak." - @transliberalism https://www.liberalcurrents.com/the-liberal-tradition-against-anti-trans-laws/

"When a trans kid wants to grow out her hair and change her name, it’s national news. When a cis kid wants to do the same thing, it’s Tuesday." - Samantha Hancox-Li https://www.liberalcurrents.com/the-actual-ubiquity-of-gender-affirming-care/

The day after we published Samantha’s piece, Bari Weiss published a single ex-intake worker whose anecdotes I highly doubt Weiss bothered to confirm the truth of and who is very wishy-washy about magnitudes. In the mind of the typical Bari Weiss reader, liberal parents are chomping at the bit to pay thousands of dollars to put their children through unnecessary medical procedures, and by 2050 we'll all be trans.

In reality, by 2050 we're as likely as not to have had another COVID-scale pandemic or two, which no one bothered to do anything to prevent, because they were too busy producing crappy reports about an incredibly small number of procedures performed per year. And in the meantime Weiss’s buddies in red state governments will have made the lives of many trans people and their parents hell.

“The attacks on transgender people and L.G.B.T.Q. rights are of a piece with the attack on abortion and reproductive rights. It is a singular assault on the bodily autonomy of all Americans, meant to uphold and reinforce traditional hierarchies of sex and gender.” - @jbouie https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/10/opinion/trump-desantis-transgender-rights.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

@TedUnderwood @brendannyhan if it actually followed the trajectory of the pictured graph it'd be revolutionary. It doesn't have to be better than the average human solution because it scales vastly larger than any human (or really any number of humans). I'm skeptical it will follow a trajectory as good as the graph though.

I'm unambiguously notable again, according to Twitter. What a roller coaster ride of ambiguity and innuendo, all to arrive at a wrong conclusion.

@gmcgath Wrong. The lion's share of rent is land value, full stop. Insurance and property taxes are trivially small compared to rent. And simply by being a house owner you have more than the median level of wealth in this country. You are citing convenient talking points that simply have nothing to do with the reality.

Please email writers@liberalcurrents.com if you can write about the details of ethics rules that most government employees are held to in America. The judicial ethics debates are so divorced from the specifics of actual rules that are actually applied already to ordinary civil servants. @liberalcurrents pays $100 per piece published. You'll also get to join our lively and interesting Discord :) Please do reach out or send someone our way if you know someone!
