Switchable USB doo-hickeyWe don't know what everyone calls these things, but basically we wanted a way to easily monitor or detach the power/ground/data pins on a USB connection for power monitoring or data sniffing. we're using the S&K SDA04H1SBD (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/c-k/SDA04H1SBDR/10063882) which is rated for 100mA at 5V, so it's not for high current devices, but we like the look of just having 4 compact switches side-by-side and there's lots of microcontroller boards that use under 100mA. Coming soon!

Feather RP2350 boards are being tested and are close to shipping ๐Ÿชถ๐Ÿ‡Our RP2350 Feather design is finally inching closer to release in the adafruit shop - having fixed a clock delay bug that was causing 50% of our boards to not boot, we've now got the tester working well and able to program and test boards in about 8 seconds. Now that we know the hardware is in good shape, we'll fabricate more and get this first set of 150 pieces into the shop. sign up to get first dibs! https://www.adafruit.com/product/6000

A level shifter just for pixels ๐Ÿ”Œโœจ๐Ÿ’กAfter noodling with some WS2811s and TM1814, we really wish we had a board that would level-shift our NeoPixel signals from 3V to 5V or give us an inverted data line. So, we designed this board. it uses an AP3602 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/diodes-incorporated/AP3602AKTR-G1/5305823) charge pump to give a clean 5V reference voltage from 3~5V. a 74HCT2G34 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nexperia-usa-inc/74HCT2G34GW-125/1300830) shifts two signals - we call them DAT and CLK, but it could be anything really - to 5V from 1.8~5V.

finally there's an 74LVC1G04 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/SN74LVC1G04DBVR/385716) inverted data output line for TM1814 and other weird chips. terminal blocks on either side make this a no-solder board. There's also a single disableable 1.5mm NeoPixel on the DAT line for testing the WS281x signal coming through OK. Coming soon.

๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ’พ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Day 2: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar brings us the TRS-80! ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ’พ๐Ÿ—“๏ธReleased in 1977, the TRS-80 (also lovingly called the "Trash-80") was a popular personal computer by Radio Shack and Tandy Corporation. Designed for affordability and approachability, it was one of the first mass-market computers, bringing computers into homes, schools, and small businesses.

Powered by a Zilog Z80 processor running at 1.77 MHz, the TRS-80 Model I came with 4KB of RAM (expandable to 16KB) and an 8KB ROM, preloaded with the Microsoft BASIC programming language. Its black-and-white display supported a resolution of 64x16 characters. It used external cassette tapes for storage, which offered a low-cost solution before floppy drives became more available.

Simple SIM breakout ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ› ๏ธIt's a new year! Time to take on moooore projects! Maybe we'll replace the FONA family with LTE modules this year. The First thing we need to do is get a good SIM card holder. We don't have a breakout for one already, so we're just going to whip this one up so we have it ready for when we need to prototype. We can put it in the shop, too.

We grew up with a Mac Plus/512K, so getting the Pico-Mac 68000 emulator https://github.com/evansm7/pico-mac working on Fruit Jam https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200 with 1MB+ of RAM was a high priority for those nostalgic vibes.

First of the Bones Rises โ€“ RP2350 Adalogger ๐ŸฆดWith the RP2350 chip in wide distribution (https://blog.adafruit.com/2025/03/27/eye-on-npi-raspberry-pi-rp2350a-and-rp2350b-microcontrollers-eyeonnpi-raspberrypi-digikey-raspberry_pi/), we're now able to come up with a lot of variants of our popular RP2040 "Bones" (https://blog.adafruit.com/2023/01/22/rp2040-feather-bones-for-a-few-different-varieties/) that ended up becoming a dozen different boards.

We're starting with the 'Adalogger' design folks love: with a microSD card socket that is wired for SPI or SDIO. A separate regulator allows the I2C/uSD to be powered off completely for ultra-low power usage. This didn't make as much sense for the RP2040 because it was not a particularly low-power chip. There's also a Stemma QT port for plugging in external sensors. What other "Bones" should we spin up?
