The end of the attention economy and addictive UI design? YouTube shorts, Instagram reels and Tiktok will have to be completely redesigned to comply with this. Frankly, I couldn't be happier that this is happening. Designs that hijack people's evolutionary weaknesses are deplorable. Big tobacco, big casinos, candy crush, Tiktok, they're all the same. #ethics #design

@samebchase in a way, we have already an acceptable level of awareness amongst adults. It's the youngsters that are the biggest victims in this whole saga. It's no surprise that for most of these apps, the biggest demographic groups and targeted segments in internal KPIs are young people and children. Legislation is needed to address that in exactly the same manner we tackled as a society unscrupulous e-cigarette companies like Juul.

@samebchase Juul did a lot of damage in places like the UK where children as young as ten are now hooked on to e-cigarettes and smoke oh so openly without a care in the world. The colours are attractive, it's instagrammable (God I hate that word) and it makes them feel accomplished even as they open to the doors to potentially debilitating medical conditions in the future. Likewise I feel very strongly that Tiktok is inflicting a great deal of damage on young minds in barely known ways.

Indigenous knowledge can be powerful. Back home, the Mwera people were the ones who discovered Giraffatitan, one of the largest sauropods known. What I absolutely adore about activitypub based apps is the sincerity of their functionality. There's no hidden business model that is ethically dubious. It's just a bunch of randos generating subscribable lists of data that you can also add on to. Pure, sincere and simplistic, yet powerful. An example of maximizing work not done. #activitypub

@musicmatze hmm, yes good point. You could open an issue for said library. Most likely the library maintainer is using it out of habit more than anything else.
