@bugaevc Pfff I know someone with 256Gb memory in their iPhone! ;)iOS also tries to convince users there's no such thing as 'files' or 'directories'.

@MatejLach While 'git' is an insult, it's an insult like 'jerk', that's not based on some characteristic (race, physical attributes, disabilities), so it's not equivalent to 'gimp', which can be used as a 'slur'.@brainblasted @strypey

@MatejLach Sure, the usage is clear for people who know. So when I use GIMP I really do just think of the software. But if I go to the head of a school for disabled children and tell them I want to install software called GIMP on the school's computers you can imagine how well that well go over. And that's a clear, real-world loss for free software. This isn't ('just') about a few people feeling slightly bad, but about a real world block on being able to promote FOSS.@brainblasted @strypey

@MatejLach It's not just a distinction I'm making; it's a clear difference. Insulting words that target someone's ethnicity, skin colour, etc. clearly function differently from words like 'git', 'jerk', 'asshole' which are still insults, but not slurs.@brainblasted @strypey

@MatejLach It's not accidental for GIMP (which was originally "the Gimp"). I don't think it was originally named to be offensive, but for "the gimp" in Pulp Fiction. If I name my software "Free User Code Kit .... Software" with the "..." being something that abbreviates as an ethnic slur, and then use the entire abbreviation as the 'short name' and run command, e.g. 'fuck***s", you can't think that that won't hurt adoption.@brainblasted @strypey

@MatejLach There is a cost associated with name changes, but presumably that's not insurmountable. The SMTP example isn't the same, because it's not that GIMP is/can be taken as an acronym standing for something offensive, but that the acronym itself is an offensive word that is used as a slur.@brainblasted @strypey

@willywonkball I did indeed make the first post public/walll-appearing, so commenting in general I think is ok.But your comment ignores my clearly-stated (a) & (b) points. This isn't a name that maybe someone could find offensive; the name alone has resulted in organisations & individuals avoiding the use of the software. So it seems to me that even if one personally thinks the issue is silly &c., there are clear negative real-world consequences hindering FOSS adoption.@brainblasted

@MatejLach I understand your position, at least at a certain level (I haven't shared the specific experience, so I won't claim to fully understand.) Often 'regulating language' in some way or other feels like a cheap and meaningless substitute for 'real action' on some issue. But thoughtful language use doesn't preclude taking other action. And I think there are plenty of very pragmatic, non-touchy-feely reasons why it would be nice if GIMP weren't called GIMP.@brainblasted @strypey

@MatejLach > Of course they don't actually have a credible alternative, yet again.runit just works for me, even on systems with complicated pieces. systemd gives me problems even on completely vanilla ubuntu installs, much less on arch etc.I'd suggest that systemd is closer to a non-credible alternative.

@MatejLach As per @aminb 's comment - have you looked at shepherd? runit works great for me and I use it more places, but shepherd has also treated me well and from a technical point of view, I find it more interesting than runit. I would think shepherd services could be defined in more declarative ways.

@MatejLach But this is the system working they way it should, no? In Unix-like systems, pieces should be somewhat interchangeable, and so re-using logind is that model working. I just wish other systemd components were more modular.

@MatejLach As far as I can tell, Guix System (née GuixSD) is the only place where Shepherd is really well integrated, so that would be the place to play with it.But the standalone Guix package manager is also quite cool. You can nicely integrate on top of another distro (and I do), rather like a Snaps/Flatpak replacement to get software your distro doesn't provide or to act as a fallback for borked packages. Guix even provides a systemd unit to start the daemon ;)@aminb

@sir @aminb I acquired an X200T recently. It's great for being able to mark up papers (e.g. article proofs) via something like xournal(pp), but if you're not going to use the tablet functionality much, probably just the X200 would be better.

@cwebber I think other than initially looking a bit funny or being unfamiliar to people who learned programming with non-Lispy languages, #Lisp #parentheses have more advantages than disadvantages. I mentioned to Matthew Flatt (re: paren-less Racket langs) that I think the parens could make Racket/Lisp potentially easier for getting #linguistics students into non-trivial programming than other langs, since linguists are used to dealing with #trees and bracket-notation for trees.

@xahlee Simultaneously liking Tulsi and disliking Bernie seems odd to me. Certainly Gabbard is an outspoken supporter of Sanders's general platform.
