@wjmaggos @RickiTarr There are many toxic "opinions" masquerading as arguments, by people who call everyone who disagrees with them racist/sexist/fascist.People who play identity politics with grave matters are just as harmful as blatant harrasses, and sometimes MORE harmful, because they encourage others.ADDING to the conversation is what's needed, not hall-monitoring.Corporate media needs bigness.Activist media needs coherent discourse.

@mina I don't do polls, but I DID do a Toronto to Vancouver to Seattle to S.F. to Detroit in 2009—when I was 50.I started hitching in high school, from '72 to'82, with a big break in between.Hitching in 2009, with the Big Crash and Obama as president, was a great time to hitch, with only a few of us on the road, and long-haulers intrigued by the inspiring sight of the thumb and the sign As usual, Indiana was still the worst place to be stuck on the side of the road. (With a nod to New Jersey, which has always used their turnpikes to systemize their hostility).

@mina It was full of cops harassing me, and motorists coming to my rescue, and expressing their indignant anger at how I was treated. It wasn't beautiful, but it was very inspiring.

@mina If, being from Germany, you wonder if U.S. cops ignore the law with hitchikers, yes, they do it regularly.American cops are sadistic thugs, even when they aren't shooting unarmed black men in the back.Fortunately, even the most conservative motorists will often bend over backwards to help out a thumbing traveler, cuz we also inspire THEM.My rides would often tell me this, outright. This has included off-duty cops.

@mina The exception proves the rule. And the "decent" cops are in DEEP denial.Fun Fact for Foreigners:U.S. "highway cops" (with authority in a gray-zone—outside cities, but overlapping counties) were originally created to catch escaped slaves. They were even called 'slave patrols'.

@simon Using words that have achieved common meaning through time (despite their origin) is how we are able to communicate. This is a thoughtful justification, but it's also a support of common sense.
