@Krisss that makes sense. I guess the thing I struggle with is exactly that part of "if the situation needs it".I tend to easily refer to autism or anxiety as part of normal conversation because those things are not a big deal to me and seem relevant (e. g "Yes I really enjoyed writing that book, I was having really bad anxiety at the time and it made me feel so good to write such an escapist thing").But then I sense that everyone else is suddenly "whoops OK how are we supposed to respond let's change the subject..." 😒

I'm seeing the fact of there being an autistic community being used to silence self diagnosed autistic people.I see people saying "being self diagnosed is fine as long as you say that you THINK you're autistic, and don't claim to BE autistic, otherwise you're *speaking for the autistic community*" Which is absurd. Each person speaks for their own experience of being autistic. Self diagnosis is valid. That does not mean "we'll hold our noses till you get officially diagnosed". That means self diagnosed autistic people are #actuallyautistic

When asking your #autistic friend how they figured out that they are, in fact, autistic, keep this in mind:Autism is defined as a collection of traits. Each trait, when viewed in isolation, can seem perfectly innocuous.So when your friend gives an example of something they struggle with, you might be tempted to say, "but I do that too, and I'm not autistic" or "but everyone does that". Your friend is only sharing a small fraction of the long list of ways in which they're different. That list is always very long, and kind of personal too. It's also difficult (and sometimes embarrassing) to convey the intensity of each item on that list. Autistic people who weren't diagnosed in childhood frequently struggle with autistic imposter syndrome, and your kindly meant "well, everyone's a bit on the spectrum" or "you don't seem autistic!" can be painful and invalidating. #actuallyautistic

Funny how moods work. In case this is use to anyone:Please don't assume *anything* about a nonbinary person’s gender identity based on their pronouns.For example, that a nonbinary person who accepts she/her pronouns is femme leaning. Or that a nonbinary person who accepts he/him pronouns is masculine in some way.Changing your pronouns is difficult and exposes you to ridicule and judgment. Many nonbinary people don't have the energy for all of that.The same goes for a person *looking* masculine or feminine. Changing that can be dangerous, or expose us to painful attention and ridicule.A nonbinary person might very well consider themselves to be feminine or masculine, but please don't assume that based on the way they look or their pronouns. *Gender presentation* isn't always aligned with *Gender identity*#nonbinary #trans

OK this is *so nice* I've just started using Elk ( https://elk.zone/ @elk ) as my web-based Mastodon client and it is SO NICE.The thing I like best at the moment is that the text input field for composing new posts is nice and wide compared to what I was using before which makes it a lot more user friendly for me. Overall it seems really easy to use and attractive. *happy sigh*#FediTips

Confession time #today. While my carefully curated posts might give the impression that I'm a caring person, I often experiment on my pets. For example, I wanted to see how Nicodemus (pictured here) would react if I offered him a TINY bit of wasabi paste. Just a dot of it, on a fingertip.Nicodemus, a usually gentle and civilised young person, grabbed my finger with both hands and devoured the wasabi so greedily that I could feel his teeth on my skin Unheard of! He's the most well behaved of rattoes, usually. He had a wild look in his eye, afterward. I still can't quite believe it, and haven't repeated the experiment. You never know. I love the confusions that happen because of Afrikaans / English roadsigns being misunderstood or mistranslated.Like the English friend who'd been quietly mistified by all the signs stating *slegs only*, "what on earth are slegs " (*slegs* is Afrikaans for *only* and the destination after the two words indicates the route) Another is a sign that read "trespassers will be continued" which is the result of translating "Oortreders sal vervolg word" directly ("sal vervolg word" means both "will be prosecuted" and "will be continued" in Afrikaans, depending on the context)I always puzzled about a sign that said "geen openbare ligte". Directly translated, it means "no public lights" but based on the context I suspect they meant to say "no open flames".#SouthAfrica #CapeTown

If you think content warnings are ridiculous and that people should just "update their filters and move on", have you tried doing that? Filters are pretty much useless.You have to construct them one word at a time, for all permutations of a topic that you want to block:Let's say you need to construct a filter for sexual violence. The filter will have to include rape rapes rapist raped raping etc on and on. A new entry for each word. And you can't import or export filters. If someone asks you to please CW, it's not an attack on you.

Update on the Maurice situation:He spent the night in the warm box! Just like I wanted him to.He's deeply, deeply asleep, little hands curled up, nose whiffing as he dreams. In the shadows to his left you can just make out the beautiful dark brown eye and face of Frankie, keeping a close watch on me.You never know.
