@interfluidity It really feels like that time in the mid-20th when the US had a crisis of confidence in capitalism after decades of rapid economic growth in the USSR and then Sputnik. Which is kind of where the modern state-driven R&D machine came from. But now the US smashing the machine instead of assembling it.

I remember my mom fawning over Cary Grant when I was a kid. Like you grow up with a particular crop of celebrities. Of public figures. And they age and evolve alongside you in a weirdly consistent way. They were older than you and hot. And then they're old. Or dead from an overdose. Or Parkinson's.

@interfluidity I think part of it is that the publics are not immutable. They change over time. And the techno-social/information environment also changes over time. They adapt to each other. We've had chaos at other discontinuities in communication technology. And then (hopefully) new norms and institutions grow up to mediate the relationship. But the combination we have right now is not doing great.

@interfluidity An interesting timeline would be one where everything "invented" by AI was automatically placed in the public domain, and precluded from any kind of IP protections. Though I imagine we'd get a lot of hidden cheating, like the AI that helps the researcher in Gibson's Count Zero.

@interfluidity Oh, you're way ahead.It's not a new take, but as things things are purely informational goods, I have a hard time imagining a future in which they don't end up totally commoditized and close to free, at least for models that are one version behind the frontier.
