@futurebird @docpop I still prefer wired headphones. Bluetooth has the occasional pop and distortion. Good enough for podcasts though.

@hn50 @aral The dev still sounds like an asshat“To allow developers in restrictive but technically incompetent organizations to continue to use iTerm2."

@dave @aral This was my thought. You would expect a buffer in return so it seems just poorly worded.

@aral @dave I wonder if there is somewhere you can look up the history of it? Maybe it did return an array and some people were wildly irate :-)

@aral @BlackAzizAnansi Just wait for it to be combined with facial recognition systems and RFID tags in your "loyalty" cards.

@aral @BlackAzizAnansi Canadian Tire stores here in Canada use them already. I suspect that it is to quickly reprice products but even something benign as that can lead to stores that update prices based on the local demographics of the customers or surge pricing variants where they update prices based real-time supply system metrics.

@dangillmor It can't "learn" anything if the people running the organizations have a vested interest in seeing Trump win

@tshirtman @futurebird I suspect that one's opinion of this subject depends on how old you are and how you encounter ads. I have no doubt about the ability of advertising to affect me but I see a significant difference between the types of ads that I see on TV and the type that I see online. (Side note: online advertising makes it possible for people to see dramatically different ads even for the same products and services)

@tshirtman @futurebird TV advertising seems to still fall into the mould of making one fear about not using a product or service. Online ads are based on an assumption that you want a service or product and ads are continually retargeted to people to drive a sale. https://www.ama.org/2021/01/26/advertising-effectiveness/

@futurebird @tshirtman This is why I think it is important to talk about who is seeing an ad and where they see it. I also think that the efficacy of targetted ads is overblown by the companies serving the ads. They don't really offer any way for academics or third parties to verify the statistics and data.

@futurebird @tshirtman Depends on the ad. Fast food ads for great looking burgers just reminds me how the product they are showing is never what they actually serve :-)

@tshirtman @futurebird That points to the failure of the ability of the ad systems to target people. I see ads online for things that I would never consider buying or using. I just happen to fit a demographic that "should" like those things. In your case you fit a profile that should be in the market for a car but this ad-tracking and targetting system fails to pick up factors that would indicate that you don't want a car

@tshirtman @futurebird A personal example of the problems with ad influence. This weekend I bought a six-pack of alcoholic ice tea/lemonade drinks. Did I buy them because:1) I ordered a similar drink at dinner earlier in the week2) I saw an ad for the product on a baseball game3) The company paid for advantageous placement in a store4) The product was being stocked when I went into the store5) Some variation of all of the above

@aral This has been a problem since the end of WWII with the US seeing itself as the inheritor of the role played by the British. In recent memory it has accelerated since the Reagan era with the US government ignoring trade rulings and trade law. And then there was Nigaragua. It isn't just a MIC issue either. Any corporate interest in the US (and in Canada as well) pushes the US government to allow it to avoid responsibility for their overseas malfeasance.
