@olav @yogthos Oh, you're one of those, are you.Yes. There are some ghost cities that were built that people decided not to move to. (So much for your "control" of an economy! Must be one of those Schroedinger Controls.)But note: they built them. There's housing for about 50-60 million people in surplus in China. How's the housing situation in your country? (Hint: absolutely fucking shitty.) Which do you think is better? A surplus or a shortage? (Hint: the former.)Specks and beams.

@yogthos They've been doing a lot of coping since 2010 at least. I think Americans need to actually leave their country and see other places because their notions of how things work and look outside of the USA needs some radical adjustment if they want to survive as anything of influence.

@yogthos And vice versa.A lot of people here have almost delusional ideas of life in the USA based on the sunny view given by entities like Voice of America or assorted movies. It's good for them to hear unfiltered American voices back.

@futurebird @benroyce @Simplicator @nonehitwonder Yep. Voting is the *bare minimum* of democracy. If your democracy is only doing its bare minimum, it's not a meaningful democracy.Surprise! It turns out that fighting off fascists and corporatists (apologies for repeating myself) is *work*. And it's work that, if you don't do it, gets you fascists and corporatists (there I go again!).

@stux The same way, Dildo Don Jr., that your family missed the clear signs of dementia in your father. And is still missing them.

@yogthos The "poet" is 苏东坡 (Su Dongpo) and is a famous statesman, essayist, and poet of the Song Dynasty. The self-serving poem he wrote was:八风吹不动,端坐紫金莲The eight winds cannot move me, I sit firmly on the golden lotus.(rough translation)The friend was 佛印禅师 (Chan/Zen Master Foyin). And he didn't write 放屁 (fart) on the poem, but merely replied with that. The rest is correct (but it was a river, not a lake). It is generally considered "apocryphal but enlightening" in Chan stories.

@yogthos These are SF's. And believe it or not, they're actually copying a bunch of local "last mile" delivery agents which have been trialling self-driving delivery vehicles for at least a year here in Wuhan. (SF is one of those rare logistics firms that handles its own "last mile".)They have LIDAR of course because they don't have utter fucking morons making the engineering decisions.

@yogthos It really was a bit of culture shock when I went back to Canada over the summer of '24. I had to adjust SO MUCH, like actually lugging around large amounts of metal (coins) because the payment systems are so old-fashioned.

Sepoch in May 2025.Three companies now have performed trials of RLVs and iSpace plans to have a full-sized system tested in December of this year.

@stux At Cannes you say? It would be a pity if it had limpet mines attached to it below the waterline and suddenly exploded, wouldn't it?

#TIL about #Quechua (perhaps more correctly #Runasimi). I mean I knew about it beforehand—I'm not a complete ignoramus!—but there was a feature of the #language I was 100% unaware of before today: #evidentiality.Encoded in the very GRAMMAR of the language is "show your source". Statements are direct knowledge/committment, indirect/inferred knowledge, or hearsay. BAKED INTO THE GRAMMAR!Most anglophone political memes would be grammatically incorrect in Quechua/Runasimi!

@ricci You mean things like that group of gamers who gathered to play card, board, or role-playing games once a week? Or quilting circles? Or neighbourhood book clubs (a.k.a. the excuse for getting toasted on wine every Tuesday night)? Or children just having unstructured play with each other? Or ...
