From a business perspective the logic flow (for maximized profit) should be:Do we charge advertisers per view? Yes? Default AutoplayNo? No Default Autoplay (this includes people who pay to not see ads)Note I feel autoplay in general is a bad idea, but at least in a business based on ad-revenue it makes some sense to have it. There is no logical reason to force it on anyone otherwise.

@fikran - Everytime I am reminded of AOL I am reminded of the first question their tech support was notorious for asking:"Do you own a computer?"They did such a good job distributing their CDROM's that people who didn't know what a CDROM was kept trying use use them in their CD and DVD players.

I registered a domain under the top-level-domain "email" 9.5 years ago. Unsurprisingly I use it for email, and it has been functioning successfully for 9.5 years now.I am still surprised how may websites claim it's not a valid email address. Not just any websites, sometimes very big very popular websites. Please stop using bad regular expressions to validate your addresses. The only way to test if a domain is legit is to send a test email and confirm its receipt.

While I am at it, websites, also please stop silently truncating passwords that are too long.If a user supplies a password that is too long, and you silently truncate it, next time they log in their password will not work. What is even worse - and I am surprised how often I see this - is websites that do not tell you they have a maximum password length that they truncate to. So then you get into a loop of "Reset Password""Fail login""Reset password""Fail login"...

Why even have password length limits, anyway?Seriously. Limiting the length doesn't do anything for anyone.

@adam - bicycle and walk as primary mode of transportation. Minimize use of ā€œsmartā€ devices in the house. Use physical on-off switches on power strips to turn off devices such as power bricks, tvs and anything with remote controls that merely go in to low power mode rather than turning off.

Bleh. The part I dislike about being a manager is the feeling that the team’s failure has something to do with my inept leadership.Ultimately, no matter what I evaluate the root cause to be, I am always a contributing factor. There are times I miss being a mediocre engineer rather than a mediocre manager.

Interns: an internship is not guarenteed employment when the internship ends. Also your getting an offer for employment does not always reflect upon you or your performance. (It can, but not always)At best it’s a long, paid, job interview. At worst (ideally) it’s real world experience that school cannot teach you. Your entire experience - not just the project you work on - is the lesson. It’s not a guarentee for employment or career. It never was and never will be.

Over the last few years we have had an increasing number of interns who ghost their last few weeks after finding out they didn’t get hired full time.I had multiple interns ask me ā€œIf you didn’t have an open position for me why did you have an internship?ā€ ā€œYou just wasted my time!ā€I am not sure why this attitude is increasing for us.I was wondering if others made the same observations?

And to be clear, we pay our interns a similar salary they would get if hired full time, pay for temporary relocation, etc. it’s very big deal we treat our interns well at my company. That is one of the reasons why I love it here. But the one thing we cannot do is guarentee employment after internship.
