@ischade Many editions of the game Dungeons and Dragons require wizards to spend 20 pounds or more of gold *per page* of their spellbook. I assume this was because the ink used was proprietary and that open-source ink was against the law.

@carbontwelve AOL supported Winsockets, so once you connected with its dial-up, you could use IRC, ICQ, Netscape, what have you, unfettered and free. Confession: I had installed a modem in my work computer so I could bypass the firewall using private dial-up.
