@collectifission I agree nuclear should be phased out by not deploying any new plants. Cost per MWh is about 3 times wind and the difference could be used to develop large scale storage solutions. We can't wait the best part of 20 years to build the things either.

@publius @collectifission The two nuclear plants are in very different regulatory environments and Barakah is taking a long time. Funny thing is I actually know a bit about Barakah having done a RF immunity analysis for the control /management from PMR systems in a previous life.If you overbuild wind in Scotland the storage requirements are surprisingly modest. Excess power the rest of the time can be shoved into electrolysers to produce hydrogen for later backup.

@publius @collectifission Unfortunately it is going to cost well in excess of £20B to decommission the Magnox stations and it will take decades to complete the work. It is a lot cheaper to take down wind turbines and electrolysers and reclaim the materials. In other news, the chemical industry has extensive experience in the storage and transport of hydrogen. There are few unknowns which can't be accurately costed.https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/20/uk-nuclear-power-stations-decommissioning-cost

@stux Impressive bit of lifting. I assume they moved the joist through the house and out of the back. Kinda surprised it managed to hold the joist at such a distance as there must be a lot of leverage.

@APoD To give an idea of size and distance the moon is currently 384400Km away and Saturn 1297 million Km away making it 3375 times further away than the moon and therefore 3375 times smaller than it would be at the same distance as the moon.Saturn is huge!

@publius @collectifission Having AC on the core grid gives a lot of advantages as it is easy to voltage convert and you don't have to worry about ground reference (Delta configuration). The issue with many inverters is they don't have high fault current capabilities unlike heavy spinning rotors in generators and synchronous condensers. This also means they can't deliver Frequency Control and ancillary services FCAS to the grid. [1/2]

@publius @collectifission The solution to this is to increase battery storage and include advanced heavy duty inverters to deliver FCAS. You can do this with wind and solar inverters providing they are delivering power (it is sunny or windy) but it cannot be guaranteed, hence the need for batteries.Spinning rotors aren't magical - you can do everything they offer with inverters if you get the right types.[2/2]

@strypey @podsroverFor new deployments Sodium look like the type to go for. Unfortunately they do not play well with LiFePO4 because the charge /discharge curve is completely different meaning that you can't mix them with other battery packs. I have several LiFePO4 strings in both my systemsSodium cells currently don't have the cycle life of LiFePO4 but rhey are improving.
