@grammargirl A great reminder and glad it saved your bacon!As an addendum, most of the tech folks I know recommend a “3-2-1” backup strategy.3 different backups of important data2 backups in different locations/media (hard drive and NAS for example)1 backup offsite (Backblaze, CrashPlan, etc)When I’m talking backups with clients the question I ask is how much data is where they start getting worried if I told them it was all gone (the last day? 2 days? A week? A month?) 😀

What’s actually great about this thread is the solid practical discussion taking place. I REALLY need to stop reflexively typing in “news.google.com” as a “check on the news” reflex.It really is just a habit, and the fact is I get a way better “news at a glance” from, say @Inoreader right off the bat @Flipboard as well, but it showed me a bunch of stuff I had no interest in, so I need to clean my dashboard up a little there. 😀 (1/2)

Honestly I think a part of it is being able to type in “news.googleblahblah” which in inoreader, gets me a “no page found” whereas Flipboard takes me a “News” page, whichI can live with.Hey @Inoreader folks! Any chance of getting a “news.inoreader.com” that just takes you to your dashboard?(and yes, I know I could edit my “hosts” or change my local DNS, etc, etc, etc, but that seems like it could be useful.) Quick q: is there a good list of #Mastodon devs to follow (in addition to you, who I’ve just followed :)) or a particular account to keep an eye on what’s being rolled out?I made a joke a few days ago about Mastodon development seeming slow compared to BlueSky but I’m also aware that a part of that perception on my part is that I follow pfrazee over on BS and he’s a pretty active poster.

@futurebird That’s one of the things that registered for me when I started questioning my gender presentation consciously about 10 years ago; that whatever facial/body type someone has, there’s someone who shares almost that exact type who would be considered the “opposite” gender.For a little bit it was kinda wrinkling my brain and then I realized it pretty much dovetailed with my primary philosophy: “people are people” (with apologies to Depeche Mode 😁)

@futurebird I started using an app called DayOne back in ‘18 (still use it amazingly) and while a large percentage of my entries are diatribes to remind myself to write stuff down 😂 the app itself is immensely useful. (I also use it as an intermittent work log and dream journal)The Apple one looks good and I can attest the (secure) location stuff is great in DayOne. “What was I doing on X day” is a real help when you’re trying to note something.

@Nonilex @derteckelansich Hilariously in his first update on BlueSky, while noting he was Ok, he also mentioned how his camera held up, leading someone else to note that only a REAL photojournalist would also slip in a gear review while describing being tackled and pepper sprayed.. 😂
