@futurebird The galactic year is a weird intermediate timescale: ~225 million years to orbit our galaxy. So one of these ago was early dinos, and there’s only been a few dozen ever.

@futurebird It’s practical: for me it clicked when my hobby render thingie’s z sorting turned horribly slow with many items: “Ooh, so *that*’s why people care about n^2 😲.”So I’d say: sort 10,000 items, measure, and try to improve your score.It’s part of my day job now, so I’m biased; looking at profiler graphs is fun!Eventually `if not hashset.add` will start to look better than `for j=i+1 if equal`, which might appease the theoretical side.

@futurebird @farah Notably The Algebraist is standalone and not Culture!(Look to Windward, Algebraist and Excession are favorites for me. Consider Phlebas is not his best (still good tho), so if you just read one I’d go for ☝️ or Player of Games.)
