@kairyssdal Yeah, I thought so too, but then saw the elevation profile. The F-22 was at 58k when it shot the missile, and the balloon was at 66k. A missile can ascend 8k ft, but a cannon shot would need to be level and fairly close. I have no idea what the F-22 can do, but no matter how you cut it, that's high altitude business up there. I'm guessing they thought this through at Langley and figured out the best method.

@peter @ebooksyearn in college, my procrastination go-to was Mech Warrior 2. And I had enough self awareness that the games we’re getting too engrossing, and that I would waste massive amounts of time on them that I made it a point to avoid having gaming systems around. I greatly admire the gaming industry and how sophisticated and adult it’s become, and also, keep them the hell away from me or I’ll spend even more of my time staring at screens.

@peter my beef is that invariably someone QTs whatever he posts with their own take on it, and I can’t keep up with the unfollows to take care of that. @peter my major critique of capitalism is that it sort of naturally regards children as a net negative, and requires subsidies to keep having them in a world where reproductive choices are available. In the U.S. , that breaks down to one political party desiring to offer those subsidies, and the other wanting to restrict reproductive choices.

@peter There are a fair number of parents in my circle who torturously try to get consensus from me on why their kid needs to go to a charter school across town, rather than the public school we can walk to. I mean, worries about crime and all that, but I hate to tell you what an average day riding the bus and walking around downtown will expose kids to... Just stick around and be part of the neighborhood scene, it's good actually.

Get a manual, or better yet, a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) right hand drive manual, like a Honda Acty van or truck, and between thieves not knowing how to drive it, it will stand out anywhere. @peter It seems to me that there is a huge area of economic study - how to shrink population & economic growth in a managed, livable way - and that almost no one is doing anything on this. Like, we all understand the population growth + economic growth model, it seems to result in unavoidable ecological damage, but what about an intentional reduction that preserves things we value, like elder care, childcare, ecology? Who is working on this?

@peter it occurs to me that walkable/bikable/ 15 min cities are a branch of this overall area, such as,you can reduce the population’s material and infrastructure need’s while improving quality of life through this work. The question of population reduction is interesting to think about here. Probably best model is to shrink in exurbs whilst seeking stability in urban areas.

@actuallybot for children to be safe while cycling, we really need to build a network of protected bike lanes and trails, especially in areas around schools, Metro stations, and parks. @peter is a big supporter of this idea

The reason it got the coverage it did was that the vessel and scenario of their demise was so exotic, and everything about it demonstrated extreme levels of hubris that people find fascinating. A billionaire sinking on a surface vessel through negligence isn’t nearly as interesting as several of them being crushed into a pink goo in a millisecond 10,000 feet below the surface.I take your humanistic point on the value of life, but the news cycle favors man-bites-dog
