@futurebird I saw a child unironically saying "that's fire!" in the wild, which made my back hurt.

@futurebird I miss my game boy. The switch exists, of course, so this is more of a comment on the state of my daily routine.

@futurebird if they had started with a shred of dignity or self respect we wouldn't have these problems to begin with

@futurebird the idea of a safe space is foreign to someone who has never felt unsafe. If various privileges insulate you from danger and even consequences, you'd think about safety as much as a fish thinks about water.

@futurebird if the circle is defined as the set of points a specific distance from a center point, then it seems natural to me to say that the center is inside the circle.Conversely, English metaphors like an inner circle don't usually refer to a space of possibilities that stretches to the horizon and excludes only a small group with specific properties (almost the exact opposite, really) .

@futurebird is it just one point at infinity? Not an infinite number of them? That is, the direction you set off in from the center point in the smaller region takes you to the same place regardless? (Everything I learned about infinities I learned as an adult, non-rigorously, from YouTube)

@futurebird @llewelly If anything is going to demonstrate a commitment to ant values and worldview, I can't think of a better audition than this:https://www.researchgate.net/publication/378821707_Performance_and_efficiency_in_leaf_transport_unveiling_the_task_allocation_puzzle_in_Acromyrmex_subterraneus

@futurebird aren't you supposed to be a role model for kids? You should pay more attention to how you compote yourself.

@futurebird you could do instant feedback: write your answer and then scratch off to see if you're right. It first occurred to me in the context of giving them a corrupted block of message in an error correcting code and fixing it, but I guess you can cover up really any answer...I now have a vague idea about scratching off to create the answer that I haven't yet thought through in a usable way.

@ptmesis @futurebird there's a developmental angle to pareidolia that's related to the development of the visual cortex; a few layers down we literally have neurons that fire in response to 😀 shapes showing up on our retinas. My evidence-free speculation is that that stimulus hits different when there's maybe two dozen friendly faces in all of existence and the rest are prey or predators (and the details of those two dozen are too ephemeral to be useful for teaching kids what to look out for) .

@futurebirdThey are realistically conceived in the round rather than frontally, and are in contrapasto stance, the weight on the inner foot, swinging the upper torso outwards. #Page42

@futurebird the only method I can think of would be prosthetics - I have a titanium plate in my arm which would be anachronistic in most of human history, but I can't think of something in tissue where the context would say "this is a time traveler" is a better explanation than "we are confused about something".

@futurebird on the plus side, the escape velocity should be low so even if you get stuck you can probably throw the rest of the asteroid apart, right?
