If it takes six hops, "This story AJ is pulling from the AP, which pulls from *nondisclosed* which can be tracked by quoting sentences for other reposts which did their work... and are basing news on a disinformation campaign from a study over here... which references the actual source, which is a PDF."No wonder folks are having trouble with *basic* information management and determining whether claims are valid.Al Jazeera story: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/07/russia-spreading-disinformation-coronavirus-officials-200728212557115.html to the page with the PDF on it: https://www.disinfo.eu/publications/how-two-information-portals-hide-their-ties-to-the-russian-news-agency-inforosAt any point in that chain - and pretty much any complex chain - frustration and lack of clear resolution permits pre-existing biases to come to the fore.Which leads to the desire for a toolset I lack the skill to code - lack even the knowledge to know where start - which would look like, "Show the trail to the sources in order, so regular folks can see the path and the starting point without going insane."Anyone know of anything like that?

@thegibson On the list of things I've heard you say over the past however long it's been, that's the most singularly terrifying.*cheers happily, backing away*

@onan @banjofox depending on what's behind the powder coating, decal-style magnets? Actual decals and powder coat I dunno if friendly, but likely not. Ditto stickers.Googly eyes are cheap. Some of 'em even glow in the dark.Designs... Let's just say I have, over the years, had too much time on my hands. I can fling you raw full size PNGs of these if you want. I think I've also got 'em sold as stickers and magnets somewhere, but I suspect it's cheaper to get your own done from source.

@thegibson @vortex_egg I enjoy listening, if if I've not got much input. It's nifty to hear how folks are putting things together.

Reading up on raytracing settings for Cyberpunk 2077, and saw that Biodiversity Library had dropped some images of rays. Things promptly got out of hand.

@Curator I don't do much with yarn in terms of physical creation, but on the digital side of things, I may have converted the entire public drop of Glitch The Game resources - from: https://www.glitchthegame.com/ - into cross-stitch patterns.Glitch closed in 2012, and *still* has a pretty darn solid community of ex-players, so it was a happy several months of learning how to convert stuff and then automating the process so my hands didn't fall off. Available free/name your price from Itch.io over here: https://wetdryvac.itch.io/glitchen-stitchen#mastoart #game #crossstitch #yarn #madness #rpa

Sometimes one ends up with really disturbing posters. This is one of those cases. The hounds from Fahrenheit 451 always gave me the creeps, and the first time I saw the Boston Dynamics dog, I had this grinding of gears between, "So CUTE!" And, "That ain't no good."So - late as usual - I saw the NYPD robot dog recall, and there's one news picture that pretty much landed at, "Oh crap, that's the hound." So now it's posters.Robot Dog image pulled from video that's in the news and thus fair use: Video by Daniel VallsFarenheit 451 is by Ray Bradbury, quoted fair use, etc.Probably the grimmest fair use/satire thing I've ever braincrashed into.

       1) Consistency2) Color5) Color...3) ColorThe amount of time I spend on color is just ridiculous, but it's totally worth it to see what I want at the end, even if it's someone wanting a battleship poster or two. Learning about color? OK, there's classes and stuff in it, but you can sit down with a color wheel, paint cards, photoshop, a complement tool, and HTML theme tool, whatever. Get a feel for what goes together and practice.Just. Lots and lots of practice, and if you're me, at least five years of doing it weirdly wrong. And maybe you pick it up in a week, or you decide you just want to do line work and hop over to illustrator or gimp for figuring out vector conversions, weights, thresholds, and so on.And then you accidentally spend most of the day Yamamotoing yourself into a happy little color corner before breaking out the cherry blossoms.Custom run for client, not for sale.Sometimes the hack is incrementally tweaking one element at a time until the feel sticks, changing a second element, and re-tweaking the first incrementally... on repeat across hundreds of experiments, until you have presets built that you like as starting points, and a feel for, "Today, I think I want spot color, military bulk to the black, and pastels. And then you boop through the six most likely builds and start tweaking from there. Five minutes to hit that first, "Ah, here we go." Another five hours to hit, "And now it's where I want it."I love working on stuff like this a wee bit too much.

Del/Re-draft, because I forgot to make public.@kranfahrer @thegibson Come join in - the more, the merrier - and it keeps the room warm in the winter. Plus, knowing one's done a wee bit to push health science along, without having to do anything other than run a bit of software, that's pretty darn happy-making.

Since I've been asked other places, my stance on abortion is as follows: Full. Bodily. Autonomy.A self aware entity may do whatever they want with their own body, and prevent whatever they want from happening to their own body. Period. If that looks like it covers more than abortion: Yes, it does. I'm mine, you're yours. Full. Bodily. Autonomy. Here, I'll make a sign: https://www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/109836305

Archive Org has this utterly lovely list where they show banned books that people can download if OOC, or take out on loan: https://archive.org/details/bannedbooksNow, I disagree with folks saying that banning books just means searching up alternate sources - gotta know a thing is banned, gotta even hear of it in the first place, and a ban denies that in a lot of cases, in addition to undermining the ever-loving *censored* out of education. But, I'm pleased that there's at least a resource for, "This was banned, give it a read."

Holy pants, they actually did it: https://about.biodiversitylibrary.org/about/harmful-content/As an archivist, I find it critical to keep - and provide access to - both the good and the bad in history, so that people can observe what happened. No striking things from the record to pretend no-bad-things, etc. But being utterly clear that somethings are unethical is likewise critical: Not doing so is often parsed as acceptance of all sorts of horrors. I'm all kinds of excited to see this go live, even if I'm late to the party.Yeah, there's a lot more to be done on pretty much every front, but this particular step is one I seriously expected would get missed.
