A week has passed already since our online event on #sufficiency as a "Strategy of the Enough".We were about 340 participants all told, with many prominent actors and engaged citizens participating. Feedback was very positive. Thank you to all who joined!#Sufficiency is a deeply meaningful challenge. It is urgently necessary for making social democracy ecological and achieving more justice. It is not an affront to our values but an expression of our values. #EcologicalDemocraticCivilisation

@stux @wiredfire The thing is that the need for continuous operation and powerful market actors (investment of billions) actually tends to crowd out more flexible decentralised energy such as the renewables - apart from being the most expensive (and uninsurable) form of electric energy, it therefore undermines the needed dynamics to truly renewable, decentral energy. Imo, the popular meme of green hypocracy doesn't hold up well to scrutiny. (In other words: Fedi is better than billionaire.)

The EU's new nature restoration law in the media: While German public broadcaster ZDF - with Germany's gvmt voting in favour - uses a commonly used headline of "EU passes controversial nature protection law" (which in some media is followed by "despite massive criticism from agriculture") ...... the headline at Finland's state broadcaster YLE - with Finland's gvmt voting against - is: "The EU's passing of the restoration law is an expensive, but for nature an important decision".

"But a last-minute change of heart by Austria’s [...] minister, whose vote is credited with saving the proposal, led to fury in Vienna, with the party of the chancellor [...] announcing it would seek criminal charges against her for alleged abuse of power. 'Today’s decision is a victory for nature,' wrote Leonore Gewessler [...] 'My conscience tells me unmistakably [that] when the healthy and happy life of future generations is at stake courageous decisions are needed.'"https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/17/eu-passes-law-to-restore-20-of-blocs-land-and-sea-by-end-of-decade

Now I'm confused. I thought it was climate activists disrupting air travel that are causing tourists problems?

"Stocks around the world are plunging ... shockwaves through global markets" writes CNN."Stock markets are reeling but economists say: Don’t panic yet" writes the Washington Post."Wall Street suffers worst day in nearly two years after global sell-off" writes The Guardian.👉 Have a look at the Dow of the last 30 years. Do we really think this is sustainable on a limited planet? Good lives do not blindly depend on ever more. Sufficiency is very satisfying - both in the more & in the less.

I attended a workshop in Berlin today. Right in front of the building, as all across Berlin, and as in cities throughout Germany: three "stumbling stone" memorials, embedded into the pavement, marking where only 80 years ago fellow citizens lived, first oppressed, then deported on a day in March, then killed in Auschwitz. And we're seriously debating hard right politics as if it were an option? Heaping disdain on migrants because of their plights and hopes?#BewareTheBeginnings

Exactly a year ago today, our big update of the Planetary Boundaries Framework was published. It quantified for the first time all 9 planetary boundaries, showed that 6 of 9 are currently transgressed, some substantially, and redefined and refined a few.The paper has been downloaded a mind-blowing 473.439 times 💥 since then. That's an unbelievably large number for a scientific paper.Let's draw the conclusions. We need to re-stabilise 🌍🌎🌏.#Sufficiency@PIK_climate https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adh2458

🇫🇮's public broadcaster YLE has followed the news on the likely Russia-associated ship that disrupted a full 5 important power & data cables crossing the Baltic. Map 1 shows the ship slowing as it crosses the 1st cable at the time it was damaged. It then made an odd loop, then proceeded across 4 more cables, all disrupted. At that point it was boarded from two helicopters by 🇫🇮 military and border guards and directed to 🇫🇮 waters for investigations.https://yle.fi/a/74-20133635https://yle.fi/a/74-20133660

"Three weeks in, the growing storm of lawsuits means some of this young administration’s most extraordinary applications of unilateral presidential power could be reined in. But the litigation also conjures a scenario that no one wants to think about: what would happen if the administration refused to recognize court rulings ... The constitutional remedy for a president who breaks the law is impeachment, but Republicans have twice shown that they will not hold Trump to account".(CNN)

Interesting moment tonight when the spacecraft returned from the international space station. Soon after splash down several dolphins showed up to check out the strange things happening. Spacecraft meets intelligent life.

A story about East & West 🇩🇪.The 1st pic shows a long-eared owl on yellow pentagon - marking protected areas in E. Germany since 1954. It's now being updated in Brandenburg (u. right). In W. 🇩🇪, a soaring sea eagle on green-bordered triangle was used.A 1994 decision suggested using the eastern owl in all of 🇩🇪 - one of few examples of an E. German tradition not being crowded out by Western size and arrogance. But since it's under regional jurisdiction, many Western states still use the eagle.

German chancellor Merz casually dismisses Germany's (already insufficient) #climate targets. In an hour-long talkshow interview, he was asked to complete some sentences:Host: "That the current heat wave is a sign of climate change ..."Merz: "... is partially true, but surely not exclusively."Host: "That [economics minister] Katharina Reiche questions the 2045 climate target ...'Merz: "... has something to do with a realistic view of what we can actually achieve."#StateOfAffairs

There's a heated debate in my State of #Brandenburg about reducing the number of wolves. People are really worked up - and not interested, it seems, in real numbers. Why?The state has 529.000 pigs, 424.000 cattle, 79.000 sheep and 7.900.000 chicken. In 2024, a mere 1.047 were killed or injured by suspected wolves: 944 sheep or goat, 55 cattle, ca. 50 others.58 packs + 8 pairs live on 29.654 sq km: some 400-600 wolves. How are we to explain to others they should protect their lions & tigers?

"The human pressures on the planet have now reached a crisis point. The era where we can continue with economic growth without putting the stability of the planet at risk has come to an end."Here's video of the 12-min speech that our director, Johan Rockström, gave today at the WEF in Davos. He's there to network against the destruction of our planetary habitat. It's a call to action on the planetary boundaries (from min 1, ignore audio missing the first few secs).https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vH7URttlbko

🔥 Major announcement today! A conference I've been co-planning these last months has been officially announced!👉 "Living Within Planetary Boundaries. Facing Facts. Rethinking Strategies. Building Bridges" 👈In Berlin, on 6 Oct 2026, and online."Decision makers, researchers, and civil society at large need to seriously face scientific facts about ecological limits. Current pathways of production and consumption are causing dangerous climatic and environmental change."https://www.umweltrat.de/SharedDocs/Termine/EN/2024_2028/2026_09_Trafo.html
