@tess @mekkaokereke @Green_Footballs @seldo I agree very strongly that no one wants to be on the social media version of big brother where you are broadcast to everyone but you don't see what they are saying about you, that is kind of worse than nothing at all.

@tess @mekkaokereke @Green_Footballs @seldo Social Media should, as much as possible, be a land of windows and curtains, not one way mirrors.

I think it is interesting and says something about tech in general that even Elon understood he had to hire rocket scientists and car manufacturing engineers and neuroscientists for those projects but he doesn't appear to have hired a single expert in communication or social dynamics when taking over Twitter, the same appears to be true for every other newly founded social network where I have taken a look at the leadership.

There is a very specific sort of thing here that I don't have language for but I have noticed. People who work with things respect other people with expertise in how to work on things.Often they do not see skills with people as real unless they are deeply abstracted and not really about people anymore but the things that make up people, eg neuroscience.

I notice this in my role because it is between law and people so I get a variety of reactions from this group depending on if they see my job as being about law or about people, and sometimes that shifts as their understanding shifts.

@zompus I mean I am not even asking for the humanities here, just social scientists!I can give 2006 a pass because there just were not that many experts in online communication yet, but now there is a real discipline developing here and it just doesn't seem to be a thing people building networks of people think they need. They don't model the people using it as part of the system.

@lauren This is why I want a physical key that I can wear like a ring or watch strap that is not my phone and attached to my body.

LLMs are modeling outputs, not replicating a process, as a result the output looks the same but it isn't made of the same stuff. It is a plastic banana. There is nothing inherently wrong with a plastic banana but as soon as you claim you can use it to solve world hunger people are going to be upset and it doesn't matter how much it looks right.

"I don't want science to be political" is also saying "I don't want science to inform public policy" and perhaps some people do feel that way, but I don't want those people near science or public policy.

Like men can be important as people all over the place but goddamn grip strength is like the thing that is hard to replace in adults who don't run on T.

@knbrindle @futurebird As a user what are our options? Not using the company usually. So in terms of what I care about and can control it is heavily binary give them data or not and I don't get a lot of control over what data or what happens with it and even if I think I know there isn't long term assurance that the deal won't change. As a result caring about breeches and fraud are what I have.

@futurebird My most recent phone purchase was for a foldable so I can read .PDFs without having to open up a laptop. I am not sure how that fits here, but it was absolutely a QOL improvement for me.

Making kids go though puberty they don't want and making people with uteruses go though pregnancies they don't want isn't freedom and should never be a political question.Civil rights are about maintaining human dignity as beyond social whims.

I really wish maintenance costs were considered a form of capital expense instead of a pure cost under GAAP. I think this would be a really useful environmental policy change.
