Just learned that there will be a county in Kentucky with a single polling station for 600.000+ people. WTF. I've been an election worker in Germany a couple of times and we had like 1000, 1500 people dedicated to that site?! 600.000 is batshit crazy. Holy fuck! That particular county also "coincidentally" has the largest share of black voters in Kentuckyhttps://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/06/kentucky-slashes-polling-places-voting-rights-mcgrath-booker-lebron-james/

12:16 pm.Boy: Package is supposed to arrive between 12:17 and 13:32!Me: ah okay*door bell rings*Me: Wow.Boy: IT'S A LIE! IT'S 12:16! ...Delievery guy then has trouble scanning the package and says he has to wait a few seconds until its officially 12:17 so his device will allow him to scan it....How stupid is that?

@tqft I appreciate that they tell you when it's expected to come (it was 1 hour 15min window), just baffled that his device software was so restrictive that it wouldn't allow him to make the delivery 1 min earlier than expected

Watching some parts of the Axios interview, I realize it's been quite a while since I last watched him talk for more than a few seconds. Preferred to get the gist from written media. But seeing him now just has me flabbergasted again that this is someone in a position of power. I can't watch this.

https://twitter.com/jilliancyork/status/1291266603972272128?s=19 this thread & the comments are wild to me. Can't imagine traveling that much and actually liking it (and not feeling bad about it...) I did like the occasional travel for conferences or project meetings, but everything was within Europe and max 1000km, so all done by train or we drove as a group in a minivan.

@SeventhMagpie yeah, flying every couple of days doesn't sound enjoyable to me AT all. It's been 4 years since my last flight I think and I wasn't planning to in the near future. Thankfully family is all within 0.5-5 h car ride range - my fingers are crossed you can visit yours soon!

Some woman at the supermarket not wearing a mask and her ~4 year old keeps running off and her solution is to just yell "Olli!" every 3 seconds :blobangery: :blobcatknife: :eht_black_hole:

New appreciation that every time I was a poll worker, it took about 2 hours max to count the votes after the polls closed. It's always a long day, sure - be there at 7:30 to organize and distribute shifts, then you work the polls for 3-5 hours depending on your role and at 6pm, polls close and the urns are opened and paper ballots counted. Our polling place usually has ~1500 potential voters, but Mail-in ballots are counted by the city.

You make a call to the city/county to get your numbers in and they update it into the system. Two designated people on the team then bring the ballots to a place at the city/county and you're done.

I'm wondering if it's just a ballots per poll worker ratio problem that it takes so long in the US or if it's the process? I see people in comments complain how primitive it is that people are counting by hand but that's what we do in Germany too and there is no scanning etc. going on.

Out last local elections were in September, our city had 2300 poll workers for mail in ballots - they used an exhibition hall this time. There were around 100.000 mail-in ballots - each had 4 ballots inside (different elections like mayor, local parliament etc.) so ~ 400.000 votes to count.

So my workplace doesn't want us to be able to save passwords in our browsers in the future and turned that feature off and I asked if we get some password manager tool instead and explained why I was asking and... They basically just replied "no" + a link to some general information about password managers that will not answer my question in any form. Love it.

The entire IT here at new workplace feels so restrictive. They gave me this Ipad that's basically just an e-mail machine and there are a lot of features I wish I could use (for work!) but simply can't. I'm conflicted though because I am used to far fewer restrictions from my former employer but that didn't really serve them well, cue massive downtime due to cyberattack. There should be something inbetween though?

Too bad you can't touch this, that half-brioche is so squishy! This is fitting quite well, although with a bit less ease than intended for this design. It should grow a bit in blocking though, will see. It's a big boost in confidence to have a garment fitting so well in the bust and sleeve area and this will be helpful in the future! And to get to this point in like 2 weeks too? Awesome!!! #knitting #UrsinaSweater
