Man, the Internets, and specifically Web 2.0, REALLY did a number on the desktop application space, innit?Today I found out not only Clementine, the music player, has been dead for years (forked into Strawberry, tho) but also Amarok seems to be gone for a couple years.A while back I struggled to find something as simple as an RSS reader that would sit on the systray and notify me (thank you QuiteRSS)And today, same deal looking for a calendar app. Ended up paying EUR10 for Rainlendar

@skrybatv oh yeah. Can't wait to see if #PocketBravery got their buffer stuff smoothed out properly this time around. Bugs aside, that patch was massive, what an improvement

@skrybatv indie title from some Brazilian folks. After a long early access period it got a full release like a week ago. It's pretty great, definitely worth checking out.So far it's been patched like crazy though. Loads of wrinkles being ironed out, but all for the best. Loving it so far

@Gargron One thing that would make life way nicer on Mastodon would be if the web app had the option of caching alt-text for files you've used in the pastI use gifs and images as reactions quite frequently and noticed I've had to, say, write alt-text for the same "Old man yells at cloud" image quite a few times

Finished Outer Wilds today. By the end I was kind of relieved to be done with it, it was risking overstaying its welcome just a bit, but then it wrapped up nicely.Really enjoyed it but there's an interesting and, perhaps, unfortunate tension with the game. The vibes of OW are super chill. Relaxed exploration as you uncover the history of an ancient civilisation. Your friends rest at literal campfires, find each other through music across outer space. But the gameplay disagrees [+1]

I know its old news but it always amazes me how big companies keep complaining about how "no one wants to give us money, they're all pirates" and uuhh... yeah, I don't want to give any of them money because they suck. They want 150 dollars for a half-functional rental that will try and sell my search history to scammers. But some YT recommends me some random music from a dude I never heard of, I see a Bandcamp link and suddenly I already have paypal screen open.Always funny how that works

Everyone's pretty excited about Affinity Suite kicking Adobe when they're down and I get it, it's a well, WELL deserved kick. In fact, it's a fraction of what they're owedBUTI would just like to urge some caution when throwing yourself into the waiting arms and walled gardens of the next regular for profit companyThis IS good and all but if Affinity ever become as dominant as Adobe they WILL enshittify and screw you over just as much, if not moreThis behaviour isn't exclusive to Adobe

@protonprivacy Well, I was recently introduced to Proton and, for a bunch of reasons, was ready to sign up for all of the goodies. But this here is an absolute dealbreaker. Time to go on the hunt againFling this garbage straight into the sun. Even entertaining this idea is a joke in the face of Proton branding itself as "privacy focused". You're testing the waters for pushing Automated Theft Machines into your services and want me to sign up to your VPN?Yeah, I don't think I will

Just kind of randomly remembered that this is the second time we move like, all the way across the globe and take this guy and his sister. They had a one year stop in Canada last time so this was their third international move. Pretty bonkers in quite a few ways when you think about it#CatsOfMastodon

@MrLovenstein It's just a rite of passage, really. You get your first fridge and then you eventually fill it up with nothing but garbage. Beer, soda, ice cream, chocolate and cover the cupboards with crisps and whatnotYou do this ONCE because it then makes you understand why your parents wouldn't just be doing this all the time

@phoronix Well, here's MORE depressing news for the dayFuck, man... I loved my Arc before it got killed by a power surge. Am a massive fan of stuff like TBB and ISPC while also hugely into Intel's efforts towards pushing SYCLBut now I have to consider all of those as carpets they're about to pull from under my feet"If I write code with TBB today, will it stop working on my Threadripper next month?" is not a question I'm willing to entertain

@eniko This is pretty handy especially for basic error checking:```if (bad) return -1;<implicit else from here onwards anyway>```So it's way less weird than it sounds
