@thegibson I have noodled on this a lot. Some times the far right adopts something because it fits with their ideology (norse mythology), or something out of convenience, like pepe the frog.Then certain groups on the left say ANYONE using that is a far right extremist. (Before I go too far, let me say fuck the far right.) Forcing the far right to lean into it more. Or worse, try and adopt something just to piss off the left.It makes for the possibility of awkward outcomes. Like, if the kkk came out and said, "Breakfast is the official meal of the KKK", would that make breakfast racist?I call this the racist breakfast problem. At what point will we jettison something because someone claims something.

There is a problem with the minimum wage that people don't talk about directly. They dance around the issue and never state it explicitly. The minimum wage is below the market price for "unskilled" labor. I hear things like, "It is too low", "it isn't a livable wage", "Workers deserve more", etc.Why this matters is minimum wage can be a tool to help workers, it can also become a weapon against them. Let's say the market rate (MR) for "unskilled" labor is $5. A minimum wage (MW) of $7.25, it benefits the worker. MR = $7.25, MW = $7.25, Okay. MR = $8.50, MW = $7.25, Bad for the worker. It is especially bad for the worker, because that minimum wage becomes a "sticky price". Meaning the market rate for wages should be above it, but can't actually gets past it. The business owner will say, "The government says this is an okay amount to pay you, so this is what I will pay you." Once it starts acting as a sticky price, it is no longer a "price floor" preventing a wage from being to low, it acts as a "price ceiling" for entry level workers. The most they will make at their first job in certain industries.The difference between the MW and the MR will continue to increase as we live in an inflationary economy where every year the dollar is worth less than the year before. But MW has stayed the same.At some point the "stickiness" of that "sticky price" will snap and wages will shoot up unexpectedly and rapidly. We are already seeing this. I suspect the actual market rate for "unskilled" labor is between $14-25 depending on where you live. That the MR has been above the MW for about 10-15 years.The only solution to this is either, remove it (which is a shitty solution for a host of reasons), or to increase and stop raising it randomly. The minimum wage should be tied to an index, either inflation, the poverty level, or median income. The poorest among us should not get a raise when politicians get around to it. If you are going to make a program like this, then make it right.
