As with #Dysphoric, I am so grateful for all the help coming from around the world with translating the subtitles. Eleven years ago, on this day, my first film saw the light of day. Technically, it was over a year in the making, but I believe it was in gestation from the moment I was born. Having briefly wandered astray, living multiple lives and donning various hats, pressing ‘play’ at the premiere of my debut film brought my life full circle.To say that ‘my life has gone through a whirlwind’ since would be an understatement. In essence, it was fleeting moments of joy scattered across a terrifyingly long, arduous decade. Incidentally, filmmaking is the only vocation I have pursued for over a decade. The filmmaker’s mantle has enriched me from the day I embraced it.Cradling the desire to give birth to an idea, nurturing it until the final piece solves the puzzle, are virtues that have shaped more than just my characters. I am the films I create, and my films bear fragments of me. I burn with an irrepressible urge to craft ever-grander canvases, weaving larger-than-life characters - real and fictional - that challenge my core beliefs and inspire as my muses. This journey has rebuilt me, piece by piece. Of course we are not broken, nor do we need ‘fixing’, but we all deserve to be heard.Almost all the people from that day, those years, have drifted far from my life, and I am profoundly grateful for those severances. I have learnt to anchor myself to my own mind, liberated from external dependence. Several anguished, soul-crushing versions of myself have vanished for good, too. This has made it easier to learn by listening, achieve by doing and, most crucially, effect change by speaking - both inward and outward - without a trace of fear or regret.When I pressed ‘play’ in 2014, in a small, moonlit open-air amphitheatre in Chennai, I didn’t grasp how profoundly my life would transform. I stood there, caught between acute disbelief and crippling imposter syndrome, watching others witness something I created. In this reflective moment, I acknowledge the fears and anxieties I harboured then, now unfounded in hindsight. My muses have shifted over the years, but my love for this art form has lingered. Whether an act of spontaneity, rooted in trauma those many years ago, or simply fate, I hope to devote myself wholly to storytelling for another decade, and then another, until our whispers blossom into a war cry.
