@ddayen The story with insulin is a bit more complex than that. It took a long time between the discovery of insulin (what was put in the public domain) and the ability to grow insulin from cell cultures. Growing basic human insulin is no longer covered by patent, but many of the forms of insulin on the market have been modified to change their behavior (fast acting or long-lasting) and those are still under patent.

@ddayenWhile it is possible to use only generic insulin, many patients do benefit from engineered insulin, so doctors tend to prescribe it. Until we get true socialized medicine, things like affordability will have to be factored into prescribing decisions, which will take a big change in everyone's thinking.

@shacker @luckytran They say in their that they want customers to be able to see the workers' faces. It's a stupid reason, and it's probably also related to a general desire to move past the pandemic- as if ignoring it will make it go away. Also interesting to note the policy doesn't apply in California, which I think has a law protecting workers' right to wear a mask if they want to.

@Nonilex It seems like he's creating a wonderful target for an enemy who wants to launch a decapitation strike against our military.

@Nonilex A key point here is that Walters probably could have survived anything if his fellow Republicans had his back. Instead, they eventually got so fed up with his bullshit that they weren't willing to protect him anymore. So there is some level of incompetence and scandal that will eventually turn off even people pretty far to the right.

@irene @nomdeb It's an interesting question. Teslas have great crash test numbers, so it's tempting to blame it on bad driving. OTOH, those crash test numbers are based exclusively on occupant safety, while if I remember correctly the numbers on fatalities in Tesla accidents are based on all fatalities, so it's possible some of the problem is that Teslas are menaces to bystanders. The tests may also be missing something, like Teslas being death traps if the batteries catch fire.
