@lowqualityfacts I feel like there is a Descartes defense here: you unthink, therefore....That being said, the only thing more dangerous than putting Descartes before the horse, is hitching Descartes behind dogs.

So, I follow the #NAFO hashtag, but I rarely see more than one or two posts a week. Today I'm seeing dozens, and then of course a few more posts and I see that the bird site is full of guano again.Welcome to the Fediverse. There are very few vatniks, because we don't have to federate with fascist instances. However, you'll likely find many infosec types who have oodles of research on Russian misinformation.@benjaminwittes is someone every NAFO fella should follow on here as well.

Another reminder that until Governor Glenn Youngkin is able to get and sustain an erection, no one in Virginia will be allowed to watch porn.https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/07/free-speech-group-backs-pornhub-in-fight-against-state-age-verification-laws/

@scallopede The First Amendment is still the supreme law of the land. Until and unless it is repealed by constitutional amendment, no American citizen should need to use a VPN to get around government censorship.I'm serious. This is about much more than just porn. This is the United States of America. If my state's government cares about what I want to watch, they can come over and give me a hand, or they can fuck off.

@scallopede If anyone is concerned that the above post might endanger my employment with the Commonwealth of Virginia, please understand that the sentiment expressed has been the official policy of the Commonwealth of Virginia for over 400 years.Sic Semper Tyrranis.

@lowqualityfacts Wait till they learn that some reptiles have sexual differentiation based on the temperature of the eggs at a key point in development, rather than by the presence or absence lf SRY genes. And amphibians...I mean some of them just excrete different gametes as needed.Bdelloid rotifers have no need for men and never will, but I suspect that annelid worms are really gonna makes some people uncomfortable...

@stux If video games caused shootings, shouldn't Seoul and Tokyo be burnt-out post-apocalyptic hellscapes by now?Last I checked their primary issues are the usual "large wealthy metropolis" types of stuff.

@stux @Gargron Perhaps on some April Fools Day, it could be (temporarily) changed to some random non-Latin alphabet letter?

@stux I, uh, have to wonder if they're aware of what the actual uncensored Holocaust education for Jewish kids looks like. The Diary of Anne Frank is rather mild compared to learning what Mengele and his ilk would have done with "half-breeds" like me, when I was 10.I think their kids will survive reading the diary of a teenage girl, especially since the diary ends with that last line about the goodness of humanity, before she had a chance to meet people who had no goodness or humanity.

@ncweaver @simon I wonder if LLMs would be useful somehow as beta testers? I don't know how you would implement it, but an ideal beta tester should be incapable of making a grilled-cheese sandwich without blowing up their kitchen.I feel like creative incompetence is one area where LLMs might be able to match humans.

@jerry The fact that I can imagine from experience what that sort of meeting looks like gives me "wish I didn't know now, what I didn't know then" vibes.

@grammargirl It's actually even worse than it sounds. Most of us reading this may think "oh, so about the level I read at in 6th grade" or "like my 6th grade textbooks". No.Reading at a 6th grade level is closer to being able to get a C in 6th grade English class. Many middle school textbooks have passages at a high school reading level as well, since the idea is for kids to learn. Many newspaper articles are deliberately written at an 8th grade reading level, which is "good enough".

@Lana Rashi's interpretation implies that it is better for the man to run into the bear...but I feel like it can also be interpreted to imply that it is better for a bear to run into a dudebro than a witch. At least the way I read it, the man would provide the bear with calories while the heathen might tempt it into idolatry. I suspect this may not be precisely what Rashi meant.

@robb Ah, that might explain why the Swedish Viggen fighter jet has an autothrottle called Automatisk Fahrt Control.I will never not laugh at the fact that one has to reach behind and underneath the seat to pull the lever for the Automatisk Fahrt Control, though. It does seem like an appropriate step for a risky-looking runway...

@futurebird @dahukanna @PavelASamsonov This is one of the things I love most about medicine: there are surprises everywhere. Granted, sometimes it's learning that statins and GLP-1 agonists reduce cardiovascular mortality...and other times it's promiscuous zoonoses.
