@stux WEll, you did suggest that people need to do severe psychological damage to themselves (ie, go back to Elon). 😂

According to https://fediverse.observer/stats we are currently at ~6.4M-7M users. So, if Matt Mulenwig does actually get his engineers to add #ActivityPub support to #Tumblr, the whole #FediVerse and #Mastodon could be in for a massive culture shock.... The best stats I can find (https://financesonline.com/number-of-tumblr-blogs/) Suggest there were 29.4M users of Tumblr in 2020 with ~%8 annual growth rate, or nearly 35M users in 2022.That would make the Fediverse jump to ~42M users.GULP.

@TheKinrar Hey - I was just looking through instances.social, and I noticed an issue: you are including non-Mastodon servers in your list. For example, search for "owncast" and you'll find 41 entries. I also noticed that pixelfed.social was included in the list...

@stux definitely see this as success for #Mastodon in general, and your instance specifically @stux . Now to make sure people aren't filled by these phishing expeditions.

@Gargron Question: what happens if someone quote posts a post that from an instance that has been banned on my instance? Is this going to become a method that people use for #fediblock evasion? What about quoted posts of people I've muted / blocked?I think this is a much more difficult feature to implement in a large scale federated environment.

@dick_turpin I'm planning to install Budgie when they hit v11 stable -- that will be the version that they have moved to the EFL instead of using GTK.

Okay @bookstodon I'm re-starting this #poll to correct a big mistake I made with the original... I'd forgotten that you can make a poll multiple choice. This should make for more interesting and accurate stats. Please #boost this poll so we can get more participants and more accurate responses. So, the question is: which format(s) do you prefer. Also - please don't argue that one is superior to the others. This isn't a poll for snobbery. #books #reading #writing

@atomicpoet I had something like that happen years ago.I dropped the .net version of one of my domains, so some arse grabbed it and tried to sell it to me.Joke was on him: I didn't want the .net domain anymore and had deliberately let it go. I haven't looked back.

@atomicpoet I don't think the layoff's are specifically related... However, the announcement of a decentralized network is most likely just to appease investors and possibly stem the losses they are likely seeing.Dell did something like this recently when they announced their "green" computing initiative after Frame started getting a lot of press for their modular laptops.

@atomicpoet This is a common tactic used be companies... They see things that they think will challenge their market share -- so they announce an initiative or some such thing in order to look like they are doing the right thing. The part that bothers me is the press eating it up without any critical thought put into the announcements...For example: how would Meta operate a distributed network? Seems to be something of an oxymoron for a centralized company.

@atomicpoet Just thinking about it -- the only way iot would make sense would be if they did something like Google and had site specific product offerings... IE -- Google sells corporate licenses to their applications which are tied to a corporate identity.Having a messaging system that could be shared between groups of companies (ie, different entities under an umbrella corporation) could make sense. Beyond that I don't see a case for Meta.

@atomicpoet So, really, it would make more sense for Google, Microsoft and Amazon since they have cloud based application suites...

Viral Video Tells Viewers How to Easily Lie About Job History | Entrepreneurhttps://www.entrepreneur.com/business-news/viral-video-tells-viewers-how-to-easily-lie-about-job/447778---He's telling people to say they worked at #Twitter - because Twitter fired their HR department, and doesn't know who did / didn't work there... IMO if I found a resume that listed Twitter as a a former employer and I *knew* it was false - I would laugh...

@LavenderPawprints Dark Reader seems to be the defacto for use with Firefox. I've been using it for several years and it's been excellent.

@stux I hate to say it, but targeted advertising predates the internet by decades. The only thing(s) that have changed are a the terms (such as "whales"), and the tools that make it possible. In fact, the idea of using demographics for the dissemination of information has existed since (at least) post WWII America. The emergence of teenagers, and targeting specific radio and television programming based on audience demographics comes to mind as examples.

@stux It's about half of the population that are a**holes in this country. The rest of us are normal... Unfortunately the a**holes have a tendency to attract and pervert some of the marginally normal people -- especially when it comes to religion and politics.
