So... #introduction, eh?I'm Tvorsk, your somewhat anxious but well-meaning neighborhood arefox.Well, for the "solar system" meaning of neighborhood, at least. ^^ND, stumbling a lot through any social stuff, but still trying with mixed results.Being overworked way beyond the breaking point doesn't help.I commission art pretty often, and do IT work of the not-cool not-fashionable enterprise variety.I also hang out in the classic Doom community.

Signed up here on Meow and on a few other instances back during the previous birdquakes of 2018.Really liked what I saw around but was way too worried about barging into such small and much more private communities to ever post. Then eventually changed computers and forgot to log in again sometime in 2020.Anyway, peeked back in, and it seems a /lot/ of people are choosing this place right now.I even know a few of you! Hi?

@volpeon Back half a century ago on east side of da curtain there was a joke... "I read the newspaper, Lenin... I look outside, Lenin... I turn on the radio, Lenin... now I'm afraid to open this jar of pickles"I think we may need a Chromium / Electron version of it these days...

@eevee Tbh, at the same time, I'm feeling weirded out at the sudden explosion of competing methods to package Linux software "windows style" by bundling all the damn libraries and stuff right with the app instead of adapting to what's provided by the system.Does it work? I guess yes.But it just feels so... weird and "wait, this must be against the rules, right?", especially as it's not as polished as Mac bundles either.

@SuperDicq @chrisisgr8 They do the dumb thing of "emulating" gear steps for sports-mode manual control, but I never heard of one that would let you slide along the scale trombone style. This should be a thing.

@SuperDicq @chrisisgr8 The counter-stupid part is carbrainâ„¢ customers complaining how "it doesn't sound/feel right that when they step on gas the rpms don't jump back and forth as the gears shift, it's creepy weird that it just sounds the same".

@SuperDicq @chrisisgr8 @adiz Not claiming a drop of expertise here. But from stuff overheard on the internet and elsewhere, Nissan & a few others were all installing CVTs from the same Japan plant and which were extremely fragile. And that in turn dropped the CVT "reputation" as a whole technology, especially in the US, despite it not being inherent to the technology itself, and other factories' designs being way more reliable.

@ret "Application keys were tried in the 90s"If you have a win10/11 machine (prrrobably win8 also works), fun trick - press left-side Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Win together and release. It'll either start the "Get Office" metro-app or open a web browser window to a link at MS's website. The 4-mod combo plus some of the letter keys will start word/excel/etc if you have them installed. Why?MS at some point in the mid 10s shipped some keyboards with "Office Key", but instead of sneaking a custom keycode into the data stream, they wired it to be all four modifier keys together. The handler for this is embedded in explorer.exe as one of the weird URL-protocol handlers ("ms-officeapp:") and the only way to shut it up is to edit registry to map that handler to a valid exe that'll act as a silent no-op (I tend to do rundll32).

@volpeon ... Dang. Volp kicks all of the design ass again. :neofox_love: If common popular platforms would look quarter this good, they'd still be so much better than they are...
