@stux Thanks for giving a chance to kbin. It's exciting to see the new development happening with Fedi applications.

@grammargirl I'm guessing the distinction is about using "quote" instead of "quotation", but I think that ship has sailed in modern vocabulary.

@futurebird Yep. "Screen scraping" as an integration method has been around for decades. It can* work. But it is horrifying complex at scale.I'm here with popcorn to watch a bunch of plucky VCs light a few more billion dollars on fire with "AI", just to learn why "IT" and "systems integrators" exist. *can: Yep, system B can now retrieve information from exactly one inquiry screen in system A. Until system A has any patch or update, which inevitably breaks the screen scrape.

@lextenebris @Victor_el_DM I like William Gibson's "Jackpot" setting in "The Peripheral" series. It deals (in one plot line) with suburban/rural middle America (US). "Hardwired" by Walter John Williams also has more rural elements, as do some other authors of that vintage. A primary theme in that subgenre is the de facto balkanization of those areas due to a weakened federal government and laissez faire corporate attitude.

@foone As a dirty casual, I'm amazed (ok, not really) at the depth of arcane knowledge needed to avoid even basic mistakes/weaknesses when developing.Oh, our product encodes a bunch of machine info in the outputs (compiled objects, images, whatever).Yep, this one let's a developer specify where the logs are stored. By default, it's the same as source files (so they get pushed to any repo).Etc.It's a damned minefield. Learn our tool. Then five years later learn how screwed you are.

@futurebird And first, be sure to take a moment to go around your group and have everyone introduce themself.
