@adam The math checks out here, but a lot needs to happen on the grid. More transmission and better controls would be helpful, as of course would storage. Probably changes in regulations and the power market too.

@djsundog Build a raft out of spare boards and sealed 55 gallon drums and you could turn that into a houseboat or ferry.

@Mixtape What do you actually do with your computer? What software do you use? Have you used Linux before?

Well, yesterday I compiled a Linux kernel for the first time in years, probably the first time since my Gentoo days. In fact, it might have been the first time I did it on a Debian-based distro (Ubuntu).I wanted a low-latency kernel for audio stuff, and the stock one was giving me weird issues with my network card, and mounting encrypted disks. I recompiled removing one option (forget which offhand), and it seems to work okay so far.

@compucat Has the -rt kernel been pretty stable? I was under the impression it was kind of risky for desktop stuff.Do you mean you're just passing through the USB controller to the VM? What interface are you using?

@ajroach42 @Ricardus Have both, and find a way to sync the tape machine with whatever DAW. So you have however many tracks your computer can handle in software, plus 24 extra.

@Ricardus @ajroach42 Good point. For that matter, mastering for vinyl will as well.(I just couldn't resist imagining constructing a Rube Goldberg machine of some sort.)

@stux We have a ways to go before moving to Mars is like relocating from the US to Europe. In the mean time we still have to live on earth. I can give Musk a lot of credit for disrupting things (space, EVs) and getting people talking about them, but he's still only one piece of the puzzle. I support him (though I'm not sure I'd want to work for him), but he does represent his companies, and I'm not why he should be above criticism.

@Taris I met this wolfdog years ago. Here he's biting a cup of coffee to spill it onto the ground. He then proceeded to roll around in it.I've definitely had days where I've tried to absorb caffeine through my skin, so I can relate. (I think he was really scent rolling.)

@djsundog @Ricardus On windows take a look at robocopy, it's not quite rsync but it might do what you need.I first looked into it for a backup script for my work machine.

@stux Check out Apache Directory Studio if you haven't yet. I've set up LDAP with Kerberos for local authentication, and it makes things a little easier than making LDIF files for everything.
