       @stux It’s worse than that. SBF used a part of the money to advertise through mainstream channels that come with the trappings of respectability. I mean, NFL refs? Surely they won’t advertise for an obvious fraud, right? So in fact he’s bought social capital and burned it for profit and left us all worse off because cynicism and distrust in institutions further increases.

       @stux My personal view is that as long as nobody else is affected and weapons regulations should follow the spirit of hazardous materials in that people are required to  use the least dangerous solution adequate for the purpose, it’s reasonable to make weapons available. At the same time, people with maximalist position on gun entitlements can be entirely dismissed as being unserious and not contributing to the conversation.

       @stux The sad thing is that not having decent public transportation or bike infrastructure is treated like an external factor when it’s also a choice. Not having walkable cities is a choice that makes us all poorer in quality of life and financially by subsidizing urban sprawl.

       @tzimmer_history Great analysis but missing an important point IMO. It's not just a question of strategic politics. He also needed to game the media who happily distort the news to make it fit with their narratives. Every time Biden said obviously important and true things about MAGA destroying the country, the media took it as an occasion to feed it into the both-sides-horserace machine. Delivering a traditional speech and baiting Rs got the media to report the important things for a change.

       @stux DNA testing isn’t even particularly great at crime solving with a fair number of wrongful convictions here in the US due to poor handling and interpretation of results. Of course, part of the problem here is prosecutors being interested in convicting anybody with convicting the right person being seen more as an optional extra, but still... most evidence used in criminal convictions is shockingly unreliable.

       @benjaminwittes Strong agree. Maybe in the time saved we could have a conversation about a justice system that causes major news outlets to think that the law is waived for important people unless they commit serious crimes. That seems like something one may want to remedy.

       @stux How can we ever forget what we didn't learn? The entire culture of remembrance (or lack thereof) is that the Nazis did that and the Nazis are some special kind of evil, so we don't really have to worry about these things happening to us. The better lesson would have been that regular people did this and nobody can ever let their guard down lest they become the monsters.

       @ZDF Job hinschmeißen wäre blöd. Warum nicht nen neuen Job suchen während man noch im alten ist? Ich arbeite in einer großen internationalen Organisation wo die Erwartung ist dass man alle 4-5 Jahre den Job wechselt und sich intern oder extern auf Stellen bewirbt. Manchmal kann man den Kuchen tatsächlich essen und ihn behalten.
