Yes, unemployment is at a 54-year low. But a closer look at today's jobs numbers shows that the tight labor market is sailing into the sunset. Follow the money: wage growth has been falling for a year. Bosses couldn't be more delighted.https://newrepublic.com/article/170392/january-jobs-report-2023-workers-losing-leverage

Norfolk Southern invested more than twice as much last year in stock buybacks and dividends as in railways and operations. The East Palestine derailment makes it the new poster child for Biden’s proposed quadrupling of the tax on stock buybacks. https://newrepublic.com/article/170456/biden-4-percent-tax-stock-buybacks-republican-fools

The good news is those Cheetos you ate for breakfast were made in the U.S. The bad news is they were made with child labor. Practically every corner of US manufacturing uses underage migrant labor. It’s illegal but commonplace. Shocking, important story.https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/25/us/unaccompanied-migrant-child-workers-exploitation.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Buybacks are defended on the grounds that corporations have more revenue than they can wisely spend. But many of them—by one estimate, more than half—are financed with debt. The 5th Circuit said CFPB can't give poor folks protection from payday lenders b/c Congress doesn't appropriate CFPB funds; it gets its money through bank fees. FDIC uses the SAME arrangement to bail out idiot bank depositors and nobody squawks. https://newrepublic.com/article/171116/silicon-valley-bank-idiot-business-bailout

Landlords make more profit in low-income neighborhoods (nearly $300 per apartment) than in rich neighborhoods ($250) or middle-class ones ($225). That's b/c mortgages are much lower in poor neighborhoods while rents charged are only slightly lower. https://www.washingtonpost.com/books/2023/03/16/poverty-desmond-paradox-rank-essay/

Food workers are twice as likely as other workers to be on food stamps. Corporate food giants score a double subsidy—one by getting Uncle Sam to help pay its workers’ wages, and another by having this assistance delivered in the form of vouchers for its own products (food). ---RT @nminowCorporations are the real welfare queens. https://blog.ucsusa.org/alice-reznickova/how-big-food-corporations-take-advantage-of-snap/https://twitter.com/nminow/status/1637851531805351944

       1. My blue check was bestowed because I write for a living, which means when I post here I work for no pay. Now Twitter says I have to pay for this designation, which marks me as a sucker, starting either March 23 or March 26, according to two conflicting communications.

       2. Not happening. I only ever got the coveted blue check because my then-employer, Politico, wanted it. It took some doing because there were existing Twitter accounts that pretended to be me, presumably to gain access to my bank account.

       3. I don’t make a great study of these things but I note that my tweets don’t travel as widely as they used to. I haven’t lost followers, but I have lost “likes” and retweets and also lost belligerent responses based on bad-faith reading. Obviously I don’t miss the latter.

       4. The whole thing—not just Twitter but other social media too—is starting to look like a waste of my time. And I really don’t like the guy, @elonmusk, who owns this site. I almost quit after he posted that vile crap about Paul Pelosi. And I don’t like his union-busting.

       6. I don’t think these thoughts are unique to me, especially among my fellow soon-to-be checkmark-deprived. A lot of us see severely diminishing returns to the whole enterprise. The End.

“It seems as though you feel only a bad company should be unionized,” Sen. Tina Smith (D.-Minn.) told Howard Schultz. “Starbucks doesn’t need a union because you are a good company. I think, Mr. Schultz, that is not your decision to make.” Exactly. https://newrepublic.com/article/171474/howard-schultz-starbucks-senate-union-busting-excuse-public-housing

I would like to thank Elon Musk for posting a hateful antisemitic tweet and then defending it like a bratty five year-old, thereby reminding me that my quitting Twitter a few weeks ago was an absolute moral necessity. If I hadn’t done it then I’d have to do it now.https://www.cnbc.com/2023/05/16/elon-musk-defends-inflammatory-tweets-ill-say-what-i-want.html

I've noticed that most news organizations now decline to furnish links to research papers or articles from other publications that they cite, presumably fearing to tempt readers to click away from their own website. This withholds necessary information from the reader. It also deprives the news industry of valuable transparency. I have always tried to be generous with links to original sources whenever possible, because as a reader I crave them myself. Readers, please raise a stink about this.
