Try multiple ones out, and see what responds well to you. Don't just get the best-selling pistol. Like the others said, don't cheap out. $500 is also what I'd expect you to pay. $450 is probably the floor. Sometimes you can find some sales that knock it down slightly. But seriously, find the gun that you would trust your life with first, then worry about how to pay for it.
