My excitement for Mastodon isn't really for Mastodon, its for #ActivityPub and the #OpenWeb.The web is a tool for human connection that has been hi-jacked by corporations. We've traded our attention for convenience and it feels like the pendulum is starting to swing the other way.

This is great news! The one caveat is that Tumblr will soon be the largest member of the fediverse by a huge margin. They need to be a member, not the owner.#ActivityPub is vulnerable to the Embrace, Extend, Extinguish manoeuvre that big tech companies are fond off. Let’s hope the play nice but let’s prepare for if they don’t.https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/21/tumblr-to-add-support-for-activitypub-the-social-protocol-powering-mastodon-and-other-apps/

If you're interested in the #fediverse and #ActivityPub then I suspect you'll want to hear about Solid (https://solidproject.org/)It's the project Sir Tim Berners-Lee is working on. You might know him as the creator of the World Wide Web.Solid is a project that hopes to separate user data from the app that uses it.A person would store their data in a "pod" and give/revoke access to that data to/from the app. This means user/account data is very portable! More so even than Mastodon.

The #fediverse has a real potential to democratise access to information. The status quo is an algorithm that we have no insight over showing us content that will keep us hooked. With Mastodon we see things posted by the people we follow in the order they posted them. Frankly it’s a little boring and that’s a good thing. Mastodon is most engaging when your involved in conversation with other people. On Twitter you could doomscroll forever. Here, you have conversations, then get on with your life

@aral I think some form of advertising is inevitable. Is that a bad thing though? I'd rather my content lived on a server where the admins and moderators of that server are making enough money to cover their costs. The server is far more likely to be around in a year than if it's being run on vibes and thanks.Maybe we should be trying to work out a way that we can do this ethically and without all of the creepy tracking.

@phoe @aral donations could definitely work, but only if people actually make them and it’s consistent. If no one else on your server is paying donations there’s still a good chance it won’t be around for long.I would genuinely love to be wrong though. If we can find a way to ensure that the #fediverse is self sustaining I’m all for it.

@brianleroux @seldo @agocke I think @seldo is saying that shaming developers or treating like they don’t know what they are doing doesn’t make things any better for consumers either.

@seldo @brianleroux @agocke fixing the perceived problems with React would be huge too. A lot of things will never be rewritten because it’ll be better for users. However upgrading to a new version of React or Next etc is usually much less work.
