The school I work at is beginning to invest in Computer Science, so if anybody knows about good sites for cyber security activities for a young audience that doesn't require participants to be at least 13 years old, please let me know. It would be ideal if students could log into this site with a Google account, although that's not required, just so long as it can be used by minors. I'd also be interested in other Computing topics: programming, networking, etc, but our focus is security.

As an example of what I mean, we're currently looking into https://idea.org. This is an academy-wide push to get kids interested in Computing, and specifically security.

Q: Should I learn GNU autotools in 2022?Plenty of projects still use it, although I feel like there has been a noticeable Meson uptake in recent years. I'm already familiar with CMake and Meson, and regular Makefiles of course. I've read a little bit about m4, configure scripts, and automake, but only a couple chapters of their respective info pages. Is it worth it in $YEAR?

Also very glad to see some of my favourite #YouTubers like @TechConnectify, @ActionRetro, and of course a few that have been here for much longer like @distrotube, embrasing the #fediverse, even just as an experiment. They are pretty much the only reason I still have a Twitter account, so now that more people are moving over, I'll be happy to get rid of it. Too all those newly joining this technologically and culturally interesting place, the warmest of welcomes, and I really do hope you decide to stick around.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand why people care about wireless charging at all? You can't as easily use your phone whilst it's charging, because it's on a pad, you can't as easily move that pad wherever you're working today, and you have to buy more expensive devices that work with it. Maybe this is one of those situations where, having never tried it, I don't know what I'm missing out on?

@yisraeldov @Linux_in_a_Bit OT but “It would be good enough in most other ways but I wouldn't trust good enough with my life” is my #QuoteOfTheDay now.

I saw this video and aside from it being more than heartbreaking, and more than depressing, it made me think. all the new #fedi22 people I've been following have been adults But that's obvious based on who I am and follow. Has anyone seen any uptick in teenagers switching from mainstream socials to the fediverse?Of course a different question is if and how they *should* be on social media, but that's beyond the scope of this discussion.https://youtu.be/GYthHOXhXVc

@OpenComputeDesign I am also one of the fediverse's young members (19 now, 15 when I joined). I know a few (basically my friends, some of whom are a little younger than me), but we're all tech / FOSS nerds, so aren't really representative of the wider teenaged population. That's why this interests me.

that's also why I'm keeping whether teens should be on socials at all out of this. For me it has been a life changing experience, and first YouTube, now the fediverse and the wider internet, have lead me down the path to FOSS, programming, sys-admin, and made me countless invaluable friends along the way. But for whatever reason, I've never once contemplated anything like self-harming, and I know my story is very different to a lot of others' experiences

4 years using and championing the #fediverse full time and I've never written a #introductions toot. Well, or I have and can't find it.I'm a #blind guy from 🇬🇧 with a passion for #technology and #programming, particularly #lowLevel #systemsProgramming in #C, #C++, #Rust, etc.I've been a huge #freeSoftware / #openSource advocate for the majority of my life. I run #Linux and I love open, #decentralised technologies like #ActivityPub, #Matrix, #bitTorrent etc.In my view, technology is built to make our lives easier, and in many ways, it isn't these days. It is truly my opinion that the only way #tech can be sustainable is if it's built using #FOSS, and does not give ultimate control to any 1 entity, individual or corporate. If technology is to help the people, it must be built *for* the people.Currently working on https://odilia.app, various projects with the rest of the Lower Elements gang at https://lowerelements.club, and a Computing Science BSC at the #University of #stirling

Any of you #blind #linux nerds know what kind of Vudu I have to do to get #Java #accessibility to work on #ArchLinux? Currently using #openjdk 19 but can switch to whatever JDK, as long as I end up with an accessible GUI.

I already have jdk-opennjdk, jre-openjdk, java-atk-wrapper-openjdk, java-environment, and all the usual suspects installed, but yet it can't find the class. Might try an older version of openjdk.

The world has been gifted so many great formats, like [X]HTML, and epub that's built ontop of it, that contain not just the visual presentation of the content, but also its semantic meaning, and yet everybody continues to use PDFs which were never really designed to do so, completely undermining the accessibility of many pieces of information. Academic papers / journals are an example, many books are another.

I never thaught I'd be saying this, but processing #XML from #C to turn #XHTML into #SSML with #libxml2 was an utterly *enjoyable* experience! I know right, in what universe is that possible? But props go to Daniel Veillard, Gnome, and contributors. It's fast, simple, and easy to understand, and everything just worked!

And if you're wondering what I'm making, it's an application to turn a .epub file into a .m4b audio book, complete with chapters and metadata, using Microsoft Neural text to speech for narration.

#Blind people of the fediverse: tell me your #accessibility horror stories. I want to know what you all consider to be the most annoying common accessibility issue. I'm talking in general, but specific examples are alright too.I'm creating a presentation / video about accessibility from a blind (my) perspective for uni, for a CompScie undergrad audience, and I want to include examples of common #a11y issues that developers should make sure to prevent.

#Webkit needs more exposure to mainstream users, and needs to be accessible on #Linux.Everyone forgets about it, yet it's a respectible browser engine to my knowledge, and nobody seems to use it besides Apple and some light weight Linux browsers. In this browser monoculture, I'm unsure of why it isn't more popular with the alternative browser developers and users.

Like, as someone who cares about competition in this space, I know about Brave, Vivaldy and all the other Chromium based browsers, I obviously know about Firefox, and I even know about some of its forks, like Pale Moon and LibreWolf, but if you asked me what browsers were available using Webkit, and how to get them, the only real answer I would have for you is "Get a mac, use Safari." I need to investigate this more.

Am I the only one who wishes amazon had a "I don't need this on a specific day, choose a time that's best for your workers," option sometimes? Or I suppose to be more specific: "I'll need this by this date, deliver it whenever you want before then." Obviously you wouldn't use it for everything, but I'd definitely use it, and surely the flexibility would just be better for everyone involved?
