       @sir A social network isn’t really a protocol. It’s just some software. And an open-source social network can still collect people’s data.There’s nothing stopping someone from forking Mastodon and setting up a rouge instance. Most people won’t check.

The same does not hold of Facebook et al.You sure about that? Facebook and co. have disclosed that this was happening for years in their privacy policy. No one read it. No one cared. The problem isn't the source code; it's the people.
