@mike @techzerker Aye, seems like it. And of course, as per the rules of IT (even though I'm usually on the other end), the moment you responded, it finally let me add the Alias that I've tried countless times to add 🤔

@hund That is really well written! I can't disagree with anything there. I keep trimming my RSS feeds for similar sources that post "too often" and just clutter things up.

@kev Haha, that’s how it goes! By the time your done it’s still your original computer because you reused the motherboard screws and a SATA cable :P

@joeligj12 That was a great ramble, it stated some clear core points and then let you express your current state. Often the act of writing it down (or blogging), and getting feedback helps clear it up in our own mind, and usually fuels ideas for follow up posts :)

@kev Whoa! Your right, at first look it makes me think you stumbled back to 640x480 resolution and loaded a modern site :P Very crazy title size...

@joeligj12 Sounds about right, I’ve done some pretty neat things in WSL and an X Server running, but I expect it still can’t really “see” outside of the windows container (ish) that it’s in.

@mike Yeah, that can get interesting! Early in my career I enabled a GPO created by a former staffer, which had names and commenting like it was fully ready... when all it did was plunge the assigned computers into an endless reboot loop. No cleanup of half-baked GPOs, no unique naming of GPOs in testing... heh

@brandon Agreed! I get a lot of feedback as an amazing IT guy, for my “PR” angle as was stated, ability to use metaphors to explain what’s happening and general customer service. To me, it’s just how I work in the field, but I get this awesome feedback because of fellow IT folks that either have zero patience, don’t attempt to understand the user perspective, or purposely go over technical to sound smart.

@brandon Aka: Recently observed an experienced local home tech. The self-admitting limited literacy senior asking if they have newest Windows, and tech starts explain build numbers like they have 1909, but might not be eligible for 2004 or 20H2. The eyes just glazed over...

@kev @joeligj12 Guess there is a PR from the main Mastodon dev aiming to change Toot to a more generic “Post”, at least as a default config.

@mike Same boat, although I support a lot of windows desktops as well. However, I do have domain admin access, so today I bumped my system to Dev Channel Insider Ring to get this started. By the end of the day all I had the chance was to launch Emacs GUI, but it worked without any specials commands, so here’s hoping. I’ll try some other GUI apps next week and see how it goes...

@brandon Yeah, in our operation we’re starting to push back more, from those ones I deal with:IT (my team): Please answer these three questions so we can help.Client: Here is a kinda answer for one of them, and also this other unrelated thing is broken.IT: Right, so please clarify the part you answered, and answer the other questions, and submit a new work order for your other thing.Client: (weeks and follow up messages later): IT never fixed my problem… You know the gig :P

@greypilgrim @TylerAbeoJordan Not to mention the Republican lawyers did the same thing, watch the news from Canada and protests in one state were to “Count the votes!”, and two states over, shouting “Stop the Count”, with legal challenges in the days after that matched.

@joeligj12 I’ve been enjoying it so far, I had to do a bit of learning and trial/error to get BSPWM to play nice with wanting laptop lid/monitor closed, and only external monitor active, but it seems good now.

@metalune I would advise the friend to avoid getting lost in the minutiae of detail and design for a blog, and focus on the writing by setting up at https://write.as Wix and their direct competition have there place, for for a basic blog, it’s makes it too easy to get lost in design and themes and forget to write :P

@seven @dredmorbius When I did IT Support for a Arctic mining camp (2017-2020), we were paying around $2500/mo for 10 Mb Down / 1 Mb up using the same solution/vendor that does a lot of sea vessel services, very cost prohibitive and required multi-year contracts for that price :P

@kev Hah, just saw this… I am not 100% certain anymore. I think it’s the default that this Hugo “LoveIt” theme had, I see one set of font files that are “LG”. But then in the CSS, it’s a string of fonts, I assume it uses the first one unless it’s not available:font-family:system-ui,-apple-system,BlinkMacSystemFont,PingFang SC,Microsoft YaHei UI,Segoe UI,Roboto,Oxygen,Ubuntu,Cantarell,Fira Sans,Droid Sans,Helvetica Neue,Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif

@adamsdesk @kev @joel @grueproof I’ve likewise never been much of a wristwatch person, but I have an 1860s pocket watch that never leaves my side.

@joel @adamsdesk @kev @grueproof Yup! Takes time to find watch shops that will service them when needed, but key wind every morning and it keeps time reliably for about 32 hours (if I’m late winding).
