@moonman Not to mention most of the stuff you learn can be learned via a combination of books, youtube videos, Khan Academy, and so on for much much cheaper than what you would pay.

@mrjunge @moonman At my University we took a class called "Math Understandings" as a senior level course. It showed how algebra, geometry, analysis, topology, number theory, etc. all build up on and explore ideas from each other in new directions.Honestly, I wish we had that class in the middle except at the end of being a math major since it really motivated me to look into how the subjects were interconnected.

@rain @_ampersand @Lexi I'm not sure if Pokemon Snap has enough gratuitous nudity and sex scenes in the first couple of episodes to qualify as a Netflix original series tbh.

@Ferretsyndicate According to the GOP we are supposed to sit in a barren room and stare at a wall while eating nothing but white rice and reflecting on how we are a burden to the holy taxpayers.

@grainloom @Taweret I don't know what its called but like I understand Game of Thrones memes just due to cultural osmosis even though I've only seen like three episodes.

@grainloom @Taweret I'm sure there is a formal name for it that is used by Anthropologists and Sociologists in their research. But yeah, if something is very popular in a culture it eventually becomes part of the ambient culture as a whole meaning that you absorb bits and pieces of it even if you don't participate in it. Like I pretty much knew every major scene in The Godfather before I saw the movie because of all the references, satire, and homages to it that I saw growing up.

This needs to fucking stop.Otherwise we will not legally "own" anything. Every single damn thing we use will only be "rented" subject to being revoked from us at any time for any reason.https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/a3xk3p/adobe-tells-users-they-can-get-sued-for-using-old-versions-of-photoshop

I'm really concerned that within the next couple of years there is going to be a new wave of domestic terrorism in the US and it is going to come from the conservative Evangelical Christian communities. And it is frustrating me that when I tell people this it is just dismissed.I fear that when these guys start getting voted out of office and courts start really cracking down on "pray away the Gay/Trans" camps that it will be a tipping point (cont.)

I knew a lot of these people, hell I was in for all intents and purposes a Cult that was dedicated to trying to jump start their interpretation of the Apocalypse. There is an Apocalyptic death-cult trying to influence events in both the US and Israel to fulfill their interpretation of Prophecy to bring about the end of the world and they have been placing followers in positions of power throughout the political sphere. This is really dangerous and I wish people would take the threat seriously. What I would recommend:Christian Leaders coming out against these radical interpretations of the Faith.Courts firmly reminding people that their religion does not give them the right to circumvent anti-discrimination laws or to harm othersMore documentaries on the history of Christian Theology, these interpretations are not part of traditional interpretations of Scripture

@Gargron This show redeemed the Prequel Trilogy imo. It also made Anakin a lot more likable, instead of what we got in Episode II.

@Kirin Where my Grandparents used to live there was a "Satin Street" and one of the street signs had a typo and said "Satan Street" and people loved it so much that they refused to fix the sign. There was even a Church that had on their sign "Our Pastor is bold enough to live on Satan Street"

@Ferretsyndicate You know in the right context I think this could kickass. Like a Church where men from around the community would come together to help out with whatever needed help with. Like helping the poor, people who need assistance, etc. you know the stuff Lord Jesus actually talked about. But I have a feeling this is not what that billboard is advertising.

@Pixley Pretending education will fix major systemic problems is also boosting the American false myth of meritocracy. Most people in a good position were born into wealth and have had good connections. There are exceptions but those exceptions are rare and require being noticed at the right time by the right person.TL:DR version: mediocre C- wealthy students get high paying positions because their Daddy plays golf with the CEO while normal A+ students struggle to break the 30k barrier.

@garfiald I heard a white person was denied entrance to a college because they misspelled college and turned in their college essay at a burrito shop.

@violet @Taweret It is, now I'm not smart enough to write like a formal academic treatise on this but if you watch pre 9/11 TV vs post 9/11 TV aimed at mainstream audiences (i.e. the 18-40 WASP demographic) you can see a definitive shift in tone and ethics. There were a ton of shows after 9/11 that were practically fetish porn for pumping up the new Homeland Security department and military action abroad.

@violet @Taweret AFAIK 24 was the worst offender. That show encouraged so much Islamophobia and shit I'm willing to bet that the show has a real-life body count."Welcome to 24, all of your brown neighbors are secretly terrorists pretending to lead a normal American lifestyle, even the ones you've known for decades are secretly terrorists and you and your entire family will die unless you call your local Homeland Security Dept. Right Now"
